Was having a discussion with someone about negating negatives in life is positive, but we couldn't agree. I said fighting is negative and injustice is negative but the fighting of injustice is positive because the result is justice. Destroying is negative and Disease is negative but the destroying of disease is positive because the result is health. He still kept insisting that the negating of negatives just increases negatives in life. I said that is because you are adding negative numbers, not multiplying them. What do you think is an easy way to explain this?

So glad that was helpful! We teach kids about base 10 (not other bases though) because that it what we use in our society :). However, this was not always the case (if you look at the ancient Babylonian or Mayan societies). Hope that helps!

You've made a grammatical error when describing 2 to the exponent 3 and the other powers. It is not 2 to the 'power of 3'. It's 2 cubed or 2 to the exponent 3. What's the power? The entire base and exponent is called a power.So 2 cubed is a power. Check it out.

Why do people get this wrong all the time? Look at it this way. In this case, it is literally the value of -6 squared, thus positive 36. Lots of people, including this video, get this wrong by saying -6 = -1*6, thus -1*6^2 is -36. (Even some calculators!) However, when you factor a square you must square ALL the factors, thus (-1*6)^2 = -1^2 * 6^2 = 1*36 = positive 36. You could also do this by -6 being equal to -1*2*3, and squaring all the factors, -1^2 * 2^2 * 3^2 = 1*4*9 = positive 36. You could also do this using the binomial square formula, (a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2. Pick any two numbers that equal -6. Lets say positive 10 and negative 16. 10+(-16) = -6. a = 10, b = -16 10^2 + 2(10)(-16) + (-16)^2 100+(-320)+256 -220+256 = positive 36. -6^2 is positive 36. This will be positive 36 for any two number you choose as long as it equals -6.

Hi J! You said "However, when you factor a square you must square ALL the factors, thus (-1*6)^2 = -1^2 * 6^2 = 1*36 = positive 36." Why did you put the ( ) around the -1*6? As soon as you put the ( ) around that expression, you are no longer simplifying -6^2. Instead, you are simplifying (-6)^2. If you were to list the same expression without ( ), it would look like this: -1 * 6 ^2. According to the order of operations, you would do exponents before multiplication. Therefore, your answer would be -1 * 36 or -36. I hope that helps clear up your confusion!

@@mathvideosthatmotivateI put them in parentheses because there is no other way to group a factor of a square. Let's look at it this way -6 = (-6), correct? Ok, square both sides. -6^2 = (-6)^2. This has to do with the reflexive property. The reflexive property states all values are equal to each other. a = a. It follows that all values are equal to each other in parentheses, a = (a). Therefore -6 = (-6) and -6^2 = (-6)^2. Since (-6)^2 is positive 36, through the transitive property -6^2 is also positive 36.
@JohnMcGrathsPage6 ай бұрын
@@J-kd2qc I'm with you. As a computer programmer I tend to see calculations in algebraic terms: a^2, where the variable 'a' in this case is -6. a^2 = a * a -6 * -6 = 36

Which would be more wise? To have 60 seconds or a 100 seconds in a minute?
@QuandaliousDingleBerryАй бұрын
Who decided on these time divisions? THE DIVISION of the hour into 60 minutes and of the minute into 60 seconds comes from the Babylonians who used a sexagesimal (counting in 60s) system for mathematics and astronomy. They derived their number system from the Sumerians who were using it as early as 3500 BC.
