There was no excuse and what they did was disgusting . This crap goes in all wars past, present and future . I was a naive Marine recruit at age 17. I found out they were going to have a blanket party on another recruit . I reported it the senior DI . I didn’t mention any names I didn’t want anyone to get in trouble . I just wanted to spare the kid a beating . The senior DI ended up having a school circle and just put it out there that he would not tolerate a blanket party in his platoon of recruits . When I spoke to the DIs all I said was that I thought Marines were suppose to lookout for one another . Marines are suppose to protect the weak. I was a small kid my self . I was only 5 foot 7 and 140 pounds . The kid they were going to beat up was tiny . Years later I figured out that I had foiled the DIs plan . I was so naive and innocent that I didn’t realize that the blanket party was exactly what the DIs wanted. I’m probably going to retire from the military in the next t two years . Between the Marines and Army I have been in the military over 30 years . I e traveled and been is some crappy situations. I . I have regret that I was part of bringing misery to different t parts of the world . At the time I thought I was part of something good bringing down a dictator and stopping WMDs from being used on my country . Now we all know there were no WMDs , the war was sold to us . I love the US Military . I have made such great friends and I would do it all over again . I do hate however how some crooked politicians use us to do their dirty work . I teach my little guy that we are suppose to help not hurt other people . I teach him never give in to a bully and definitely stop someone from getting bullied . I’m pretty sure I would have done what Fox did. I couldn’t live with myself if I allowed that kind of crime go unanswered . I would hope i could figure a way to save the girl

Dales character is right. The film doesn't mention it but the real life men that were convicted all successfully appealed and were given reduced sentences, and then received early parole. One of them eventually joined a White Supremacist group and murdered an African American.

Officers always try to cover shit up or sweep shit under the rug so they don’t have to address it or do “paperwork”. They’re supposed to “lead” but most had the wrong intentions and should never be allowed to lead even a boy scout group. The military(some parts - especially an infantry unit) can be grossly corrupt.

What’s so powerful about this scene to me is the captain seems fully aware of how bad and evil this situation is, but you get that sense he’s been there long enough to have probably seen worse. He points out what Erickson doesn’t even consider like a conviction, weither they’ll serve time, putting a target on his back etc. The way he tells him “no one’s trying to stop you from reporting anything” really hammers home the idea he’s not saying this because what the others did was right, he’s chewing out Erickson for his own safety if he reports it

Putting himself right in the firing line erickson here but he 100% did the right thing. He was out thare in the bush with a bunch of sick men. As a film it is well told and sean penn is brilliant, great actor. It highlights again what kind of messed up war Nam was. Erickson as the guy on meserves group that actually had the most courage, MJF played it well and put a target on his back bringing it out to his superior's, but yeah he was right all day long.

You should look up the Mai Lai Massacre where a US Army helicopter pilot landed his chopper in front of a group of civilians to stop Soldiers from murdering civilians and ordered his crew to fire on the troops if they harmed another one. No country is perfect I agree. But I don't see how the Vietmin and the talibans are the aggressors when they are on their homeland. One can't pretend to fight for others freedom abroad and not see the disparities at home. They had to conduct war crime investigations and trials. It's mostly because of the fact that they let the free press cover this war. The "sanitary war " was when Hollywood took part in the war efforts of WW2..... No such thing as sanitary war.

You are correct in your thoughts. Also consider that it's a known fact that, given the chance, our enemies would rather surrender to a US outfit than be taken prisoners by other factions or even return defeated to their own!
