I don’t know if bittersweet vine was ever sold as an ornamental plant, but it’s like the Northeast version of kudzu (although not as smothering). Although it starts as a spindly vine with what look like shiny string beans hanging on it, if it is not ripped out it will climb up trees, turning into massively thick runners and strangle the host tree. When I first saw it in the woods in NH I thought it was another tree choking out its host!

They all surprised me as i just planted mine and left it alone. It blooms beautifully year after year. Most people i know are not garden people. They plant and that’s it. There clematis look great year after year. So i took a cue from them.

Great to see people starting to more often warn about the danger of plants sold in stores. I'm always amazed at how companies will still offer these plants even though they know there's a problem. They always try to find a workaround, claiming a new variety is "seedless" or "sterile", but we have to always remember that they said the same things about Bradford Pear. You can never know how different cultivars will react with each other, so just don't buy the stinkin' thing! We have so many beautiful native plants that serve the same purpose while also supporting the food web and creating a "sense of place". Use them and create a "sense of place" that's wholly unique rather than a carbon copy of everywhere else.

Purple Loosestrife is killing our wet lands but I live in zone 3 Canada and have been fighting English Ivy for more than 8 years. I suspect your listing it as being invasive only in zones 5 to 11 isn't really correct. The other thing we need to remember is that as climate continues to get warmer, many of the plants that weren't invasive in our areas may quickly become so. Keeping that in mind, I wouldn't plant any of these anywhere.

Spigelia ‘Little Redhead’ USDA Zones 5-9 Also known as Indian pink, this perennial is an excellent source of nectar for hummingbirds and other pollinators when in bloom. Plants form clumps with glossy green foliage, topped by crimson red, trumpet-shaped flowers in summer. Height: 24-28”

I bought my 1 gal macrophylla hydrangea in late spring. The blooms were faded, but the foliage looked great! Promising, right? I re-planted it in a 5 gallon pot using Miracle Grow potting soil. Since then, its leaves have been curling and dropping. I pulled it out of its pot to see if the soil was too wet or dry. It's barely moist/perfect! Out of concern, I replanted it in fresh, new soil. It sits on our back porch where it gets dappled morning sun. I am confused as to what the issue is! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! TIA!!!

We are happy to help! There are several factors that could be contributing to the decline of your hydrangea, even though it seems you are taking the correct steps. First, please ensure that your container has adequate drainage holes. The soil should remain slightly moist, but excess water needs to drain. If you decide to repot in the future, we recommend using a soil mix of pine bark mulch and peat moss. This mix will provide the necessary acidity for the plant and promote good drainage. Additionally, thank you for subscribing to our channel!

At that point, it is best to cut around the root system and plant the entire seed, root system, and attached paper towel.

Bishop's weed - Aegopodium podagraria is another one that spreads by rhizome and creeps beyond fence lines to invade neighboring gardens. It is useful for shady areas, however, and can be safely contained with a 12" garden edging. I used metal roof flashing! Ha!

Late winter is often the best time to prune fruit trees such as apples. However, you can remove suckers, crossing or dying branches at anytime. I will link our guide to pruning apple trees below for your reference. www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/fruits/apples/pruning-apple-trees.htm

I have hostas planted by my clematis because I figured they would shade the clematis roots well and have shallow roots themselves. But now I'm wondering if the hostas are taking the nutrients away from my clematis because I don't get many blooms despite the sun they get. Or possibly slugs hurt them, but I haven't seen slugs eating the hosts, so idk. What is your opinion?
@Gardeningknowhow
@Gardeningknowhow 21 күн бұрын
There could be a lack of nutrients available to the clematis. If slugs were present, you would notice multiple dead stems. I would suggest moving the hostas if they have grown too large or supplement with an organic granular fertilizer around the base.

Too late on the Burning Bush and Barberry. But just a note on "fragile" nature. Four years ago my husband and I bought a two-acre property on the Wind River. To say it was neglected doesn't even capture it - it was overgrown with willows, cottonwoods, and weeds and essentially being used as a dump. Piles of boards, old rolls of wire, 350-plus beer cans, and that was just the start. But as we cleared the trash we were amazed at how few living things we were seeing, essentially one chipmunk and a couple of dime-sized spiders. It was like it was sterile! Well, we took out dead trees and planted new ones (and shrubs), built a house and garage, planted a lawn and a vegetable garden. We weren't naturalizing, just making it tidy, but Mother Nature moved on in. Many more chipmunks, then pocket gophers, then prairie dogs, then rabbits, then black snakes, then herds of deer, and huge flocks of geese! We're seeing the entire food chain! Next will be badgers, wolverines, wolves, and cougars. I read so much about wildlife hanging by a thread, but here in Wyoming it's happy to get up close and cozy!

You might want to add Russian Sage to your list. I planted it as a border to hide an ugly fence and it is loved by bees and butterflies. But now it is growing into my lawn. It would be nice to know how to get rid of them from my lawn. Lou Magsamen Windsor, PA

Lily of the valley... we have those here in Sweden, too. They only bloom during a short period by the end of spring/ beginning of summer, and I'm very fond of their scent because of all the memories it brings back (plus it's a nice scent). But they are hard to grow in a garden, I mostly see them in the wild.
