This is Brussels 1974...and we are now in 2024..fifty years on..and not a single female or male singer to even come close to this Sarah Vaughan rendition of Body and Soul piano and all...the whole shabang!! NOT even close!!!!

Pourquoi gâcher l'interprétation de ce grand musicien en l'entourant uniquement d'autres musiciens venus de la musique classique ? N'y a t-il pas suffisamment de très grands musiciens de jazz, capables de l'accompagner, de le soutenir et de tirer le meilleur de lui-même, en utilisant le même langage musical ? Ce ne sont jamais leurs meilleures interprétations, lorsque l'on a fait accompagner par des violons, violoncelles les grands jazzmans. Dommage.

This era when Harry was still young was the limited peak that he should have portrayed Sinatra. As much as that is true, he doesn't swing like Sinatra, but had the look. Listen to the album recording of Sinatra/Count Basie & His Orchestra with Quincy Jones' arrangements and that will have you in solid agreement. If they had done a picture while he was alive, Frank would have instilled in young Harry a relentless, unswerving dedication to the craft of singing. Instead, rumours are again bubbling, 2024 post 'Killers of the Flower Moon' mess that Scorsese will finally get his wish. But DiCaprio??? Oy vey...

The greatest music night of my life featured Nancy Wilson as the last act. I was in Chicago in 1978 and saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the old Biograph theater. Next, my little group went to a punk club where some St. Louis girl punk band screamed, strummed, and banged through a wild set. Finally, I broke away from my friends and went to a jazz club in the loop for Nancy Wilson's last set. Wilson was one of my father's favorite singers, and I grew up listening to her records so I couldn't miss her. Loved her so.

What do you think jazz is? If anything, it’s improvising on the spot, changing the metre and melody as the moment and your collaborators strike you. Carmen Mcrae was a master of the form and substance of the music she chose to perform.
