You can do both! If you’re layering with oil paint you want to make sure u add a little more oil medium into your mixes with each new layer so that the paint gets more flexible & you don’t get cracking in the future. But layering techniques like glazing are some of the most beautiful!

That’s not the case for me - the paint hasn’t started curing before I get back to it. Many artists oil painters do it this way, many don’t, just do what’s right for you. :)

I’ve seen a knockoff of the Silicoil jar at Micheal’s tho I don’t know how good it is. but there are other jars that are metal on Amazon that can be cheaper. You can also use a regular jar and stick something in the bottom like a pop can with holes in it or a sink drain.

@@dorisroseart yes, i found some silicone brush cleaning disks to use with a regular jar but I’m not sure Chelsea brush cleaner might melt the silicone? Have you tried them? Also I have one metal airtight medium size brush cleaner from Amazon, I spilled it over my desk and ground while trying to close it. Maybe I am clumsy but that one doesn’t work easy for me. On top of it Chelsea cleaner is expensive!! Maybe I should stick with my sticky water mixable oils😅

Personally I don’t recommend you use it, or any other lead whites. My view is that it’s not worth the risk as even if you use all the safety precautions, accidents can still happen. It’s definitely a risk around pets or small kids & even in the future if the painting breaks down or anyone sands the painting (though this is not super likely) you could cause unintentional harm. I can’t really speak to the characteristics of the paint as I’ve never used it but I’ve always been happy using titanium whites. So it’s up to you, some artists still use it & it’s possible to have strict studio safety but I have never felt that the benefits outweigh the downsides.

I used a pencil brush (that I modified a bit) to sketch it in, but then did the rest of the painting using Salamanca.

The things to think about from the artist side are really up to you & what you’re comfortable offering. As mainly a portrait artist I enjoy doing commissions but many artists prefer not to. I’d recommend if you do offer commissions to set up a page on your website explaining how your process works so that you can direct potential clients to find all the information there. Make sure once you’ve discussed the project you get them to sign a commission agreement which clarifies all the details & ask for at least 30% of the total cost as a down payment. You can look up standard agreements or check out other artists websites for ideas. :)

That’s why I said the ‘best camera you can get your hands on’ 😝 I borrow the camera in the video when I’m taking final pics of my art - it may be possible to rent one as well - but not everyone has access to a more fancy camera for sure. Phone cameras these days can be pretty good & all we can do is use the best tools available.

No it’s not. In fact I don’t use solvent while I’m painting. I use it to clean my brushes at the end of the day before soap & water. Sometimes I will use solvent with my paint to create a thin wash in the first layer of the painting. Going solvent free means you’re not breathing in fumes as you paint but it does make it a little harder to clean brushes (you can use oil medium to thin the paint on the brush before soap & water). Just remember to be careful with oil soaked rags & make sure they always dry flat (not balled up) & put them in a metal cookie tin or fire safe container. Oily rags can be a fire hazard so even though they don’t have fumes like solvent they do come with risks.

Oh dear! If you don’t paint too thickly & use linseed or alkyd oils it could ‘feel dry’ aka be unsmudgable before the event & you can gift the painting then let it fully cure before varnishing later. I’m sure they’ll appreciate such a thoughtful gift even if it’s not fully dry/cured in time for the wedding!

@@dorisroseart I really admire you more now because I tried to paint today, and honestly it's so much work! To set up all the necessary stuff in a working space, mixing and searching for colours, the smell of paint and turpentine, the cleaning everything after was such a hassle! And so much patience to wait for it to dry several times. Digital art is amazing honestly you have infinite canvas, colours, brushes, no cleaning or mess is involved, you can always take things back, play with proportions etc. For this i had to buy lots of stuff and the white paint I already used most of .. traditional art is seriously expensive and effort consuming I think I'll stick with my tablet :) I did a really bad job as well . I was expecting paint to be thicker for some reason or maybe I'm the problem, but it didn't hold like I wanted, I wanted to put layers on the base colours and I had to use a lot of white , like thin white lines that are very clear, for her dress details which were full of white flower and plant motives over light blue, didn't hold at all so I gave up on that. I'd done watercolour on thick paper before and was happy with those results. Oil definitely doesn't agree with me
