Thank you so very much for this video! This was my favorite place to climb as a young man with my friends Ralphy and Dave. I may still have the orange colored guide book shown in your video. It was always fun to come across some old pins on the early routes.

Where is the chapter that mentions the many sandbagged climbs? Or this is not "gym climbing" nor a "sport climbing destination." Interesting to see that Double Cross went from F8 (5.8) to "5.7+" over time.

I’m sure how easy it looks is really just a product of Ethan’s climbing. When you can finish off a 13 in one session, I’m sure you can hike some V8’s. I’m sure the large holds really aren’t as great as they look on camera.

Did anyone notice that LJ looks like Alex Honold after 25 years. Very good try. Age is a number. I'm a pretty good proof to that. I'm 56 and I can climb anything I could do in my 20's and I was climbing very badass sports or trad routes then.

I actually got to climb this route, belaying my friend who is a very good climber. It was terrifying just to belay him, watching him find his way through that sea of knobs... the 10d pitch.

Cool series. I'm a bit intimidated, but I will be there over the summer would love to take my son to this spot for us to try. How welcoming is it? Is there a place to rent a bouldering mat?
@GiantRock4 ай бұрын
While I haven't been to Stoney in a few years, I would bet the chances of meeting cool people who might even let your son climb over their pads is pretty high. Not sure about pad rentals but you should be able to get one for ~$150 at REI plus a pair of climbing shoes and chalk bag and you'd be all set. But before doing that I'd suggest just taking a little hike around the perimeter of Stoney and you'll get the lay of the land and check the vibes. Another option would be to hire a local guide to take you guys Top Roping, it would be 100% safe and they would bring everything you need. However you go about it I think taking your son climbing is one of the best things you could do, I know I would have loved to have discovered climbing anytime before I finally did at 20yrs old.

Hey dude thanks so much, means a lot especially right now as I've been in a slump for the past year. However, and I'm not BSing here, I am half way through the edit of my next video and while it's not another New Deal level doc, I'm really excited about it and can't wait to share it soon, definitely within the month.

Trad climbing without helmet. Sorry but thats just dumb.
@robertnewell40544 ай бұрын
Traditional Climbing has long eschewed helmets save in areas or routes where rockfall & choss is a true concern. The real issue here is Basic RockCraft, as the great Royal Robbins labeled it.
@GiantRock4 ай бұрын
you are 100% right, though I'd probably still strap one on if I thought the chance of taking a big whipper wasn't insignificant.

@@GiantRock ….. I’m 60 now… the Saltiness is probably obvious. Started Climbing at 18 in The Valley. At that time Helmets were a rarity. I do think it’s good move that helmets are more common. It just vexes me to see folks so preoccupied about helmets & not developing RockCraft. The age of Gyms has raised the technical climbing level significantly, while simultaneously missing development of necessary RockCraft skills. Subjectively there’s far more injuries due to lack of RockCraft than lack of Helmets
