Updated: 8/27/2024 12:31:49 AMFront Page  Upheaval against ‘parachute candidates’; Veterans revolt, likely to take refuge in Delhi Jammu: The release of candidates’ list for JK assembly elections from Bharatiya Janata Party’s headquarters today besides receiving an early setback was later trolled at Jammu headquarters too as things got totally skewed up with no damage control in sight. The party started with an ‘early default’ by releasing a complete list of 44 candidates for three phases of elections, immediately later, to scrap off the list off its website. It was later replaced with a 16 members list, candidates for first phase. This abrupt change triggered discontent among party workers and leaders alike, highlighting deeper issues within the party ranks. Many party workers who felt sidelined in favor of "parachute candidates" , those perceived as outsiders with little connection to the local party structure, expressed their anger through protests at the BJP headquarters in Jammu. The grievances primarily stemmed from the belief that dedicated, long-serving workers were being overlooked in favor of newcomers or candidates who recently joined the party from other political backgrounds. J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina attempted to downplay the discontent, but the protests underscored a significant rift within the party. The anger was not confined to one area but was widespread, with party workers from various assembly constituencies voicing their dissatisfaction. Some angry BJP workers from different assembly constituencies staged a protest at the party headquarters over the leadership "ignoring" hardworking workers and giving the mandate to "parachute candidates". Jagdish Bhagat, president of the BJP's Scheduled Caste Morcha, asserted that long-time members of the party felt overlooked. "I have been associated with the party for the last 18 years and have worked day and night to strengthen it but the mandate was given to a person who joined the party only a few days back," Bhagat said. Welcoming the withdrawal of the initial list, he said, "We hope that party leaders would be given the mandate instead of those who have done nothing for the party. "If they ignore us, there will be serious consequences. We will not allow any wrongdoing and will protest against this injustice within the party," he added. One of the most notable protests occurred at the party office in support of Om Khajuria, an aspirant from the Jammu North seat, who was overlooked in favor of Sham Lal Sharma, a former Congress leader. Khajuria's supporters argued that he had topped internal surveys, yet the party leadership opted for Sharma, further fueling the perception that loyalty and hard work were being disregarded. The revised list of candidates featured several notable figures, including three former MLAs and Shagun Parihar, a woman candidate whose family has a history of facing violence due to their political affiliations. Her inclusion in the list, along with other prominent names like former ministers Sunil Sharma and Shakti Raj Parihar from the Jammu region, and BJP vice president Sofi Yousuf from the Kashmir Valley, did little to quell the growing unrest within the party. In a surprising move, several senior BJP leaders, including former deputy chief ministers Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta, were left out of the candidate list. This exclusion appeared to have further exacerbated tensions, with sources indicating that these veterans, alongside other old stalwarts like Sukhnanandan Chaudhary, Sham Chaudhary, Sat Sharma, and Bali Bhagat, were considering a coordinated response. Rumors circulated that they might travel to New Delhi to express their grievances directly to the party's central leadership. Amid the internal strife, Ashok Koul, BJP's Organizational Secretary, tried to downplay the situation by claiming that the protests were being blown out of proportion and were mainly restricted to the Jammu North constituency. “The initial list was retracted because it lacked candidates for several constituencies in the Kashmir Valley, promising that the complete list would soon be made public. The names already announced for the Jammu region would not change,” he said. BJP chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi also added, urging party members to remain patient and refrain from jumping to conclusions about the candidate selection process. He emphasized that the BJP was fully prepared for the elections, and that the remaining candidates for the second and third phases would be announced soon. As of now, 14 candidates have filed their nomination papers for the first phase of elections. August 27 is the last date for filing nominations for the first phase. The process of filing nominations for the second and third phases will begin on August 29 and September 5, respectively. The counting of votes for the elections will be taken up on October 4. In the last assembly elections held in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014, when it was a full-fledged state, the BJP had won 25 seats. The BJP is looking to build on its performance as it faces a rejuvenated challenge from the Congress-National Conference alliance, particularly in the Jammu region.
