This type of setting and vibe it’s better to use all the strings on the piano to sound more full and let the epiano or guitar do the solo and accompany you while you play solemnly

Simply put, He's temporarily switching to D minor key. And uses the D minor harmonic scale... And the chords being played are chords in D minor
