It's been a while, so feel the need to chip in. This podcast is a 9/10 for level headed reviews, would be a 10/10 but got to drop a point for the insistent need to play alien ant farm (I refuse to use capitals for them).

That’s a stupid reason to ditch one point for this excellent KZfaq channel. It’s only a song and holds great memories of 2001/02 for me as well as being a great tune and references movies which is why they picked it in the first place ! It only loses one point for the way that kid Brett interrupts film intellectual mark . But I guess that’s normal as they review all their films in conversation. So it’s 9/10 for me too 🎉

Cat Person isn't supposed to be a horror movie. It's a movie about subjectivity that comes at the subject (in part) through an examination of genre itself. The opening scene is a rom com meet cute with a horror movie trailer playing in the background. This is absolutely intentional, and the tonal whiplash and ambivalence you feel while watching it is the point. Just as Robert's ideas of romance come from watching Harrison Ford movies and his ideas about sex come from porn, Margot's ideas about romance come from movies. When the movie "goes horror" in act 3 it is based entirely on her projections. That there is no actual horror movie there, other than the one she's imagining into existence is the POINT. In other words, it's not saying women's lives are a horror movie. It's saying women's subjective experiences straddle numerous tones and genres at once, often intersecting with cultural narratives about what to expect from relationships (is he "the one" or is he a murderer?) which results in confusion, dysfunction and people getting hurt. In this it's the rare feminist movie that is ultimately very kind to the guy. Margot suffers because of his projections onto her, but he also suffers greatly because of her fantasies (romantic and horrific) about him as well. The third act in particular, which intentionally enters into a dialogue with the short story rather than plainly adapting it, is fucking genius. That is very obviously the bravest thing they could have done. There's no point adapting it otherwise.

The Long Good Friday is an astonishing film. Just ahead of Get Carter for me in terms of British gangster films. It works as a straightforward thriller, but delve a little deeper and there are critiques of (what became known as) Thatcherism, the fear/paranoia of IRA violence and the defeat of the old fashioned British 'stiff upper lip' mentality. The wordless twist is one of the greatest endings in movie history, and easily Bob Hoskins' finest moment.

By the way, this was the one of the first instances of a professional gamer making it into racing, but has happened multiple times since then with discovering talents through gaming. There is actually a game simulation now called iracing (most lifelike race simulation out there) and NASCAR race teams keep a eye out for young kids dominate on iracing. If they find a kid that dominates on iracing they will put some money behind that talent and see if they can develop them through the ranks of NASCAR (late models and then ARCA then the Truck Series, then the xfinity series, and then the Cup Series). The most successful driver to come through this program has been William Byron (has been Truck series Rookie of the Year, has been Xfinity Champion and Rookie of the year in the same season, leading the Cup Series this season in wins so far with 4). He is also driving the legendary 24 car that was previously driven by Jeff Gordon before he retired.

Absolutely fascinating! Guess it’s not so dumb
@codyprice261611 ай бұрын
@@rogerebertpod Well, depends on the race simulation program you are using (Usually a PlayStation game typically is not the direction you want to go typically). Specifically, iRacing is the best racing simulation program to use for this, because it is a racing simulation subscription you have to pay for which is $13 a month, and this racing simulation though is based on scans of the actual professional tracks the drivers race on and actual data taken from the track on how the vehicles drive and handling to give you the most real life simulation as possible. Also, you start out with a driver’s license and the better you do in racer your license improves in grade; the worse you do in a race it can also lower your license score. Also, your license score also also you to run different types of cars as your score gets better. So can’t race at the highest level right away like in real life, have to earn your way up, like you have to in real life. You just might get there a little quicker in the race simulation of course. They also have professional racing leagues in iracing as well, and sometimes race teams will hire the really good iracing simulation racers to help set up their simulators at the race shops for the drivers to practice on. Since their is limited testing and practice nowadays. The way to practice for the track ahead is by simulation at the race shop. This is why they will take a chance on a kid that dominates on that specific race simulation, but the kid still has to but the work in to get to the top of the sport. Some kids are good enough to get to the top level in 5 years or less but not many, William is one of the few that made it to the Cup Series by age 20. Usually about a 8 to 12year process and get to the Cup level by age 24-28. Of, course too, there are some that can’t cut it and can’t get past late models as well. It is also a cut throat sport once you get to the top of the sport as well and if you don’t perform well in Cup might be going back down and going back down to Xfinity or Truck even if you are a promising talent. Their have been rookie drivers get fired after their rookie season at the top level. So you get your chance at the top level better take advantage of the opportunity.

The worst thing about there being only 3 films out this week is that it makes the show a lot shorter, and therefore, Alien Ant Farm takes up a higher percentage of time. I've done some maths; last episode AAF took up 5.84% of the show. The episode before that 4.74%. This week AAF took up a whopping 9.47% of the show! Utterly Disgusting!
