I’m here to ask you for a follow up since this was a year ago! Did you end up using story time treasures? If so how did it go? My 5.5 year old can read pretty well but I love how memoria press really digs deeper into those books. He’s a huge frog and toad fan. I have spelling reading, handwriting and math covered but struggle with what to use for content. I keep going back and forth with memoria press and moving beyond the page.

Yes, we did! Long story short, I think it’s a much better fit for second grade and I wish I had realized that sooner. While she did eventually catch up with the reading level by the end of first grade, she did not have the stamina or fine motor skill (lots of writing) to do the curriculum. I wish I had known all of this in advance because I definitely would have saved it! I think it could work better for a precocious reader, and you could perhaps ask all of the questions orally! Hope this helps! 🙃

When you say ‘You can’t do Bookshark ontop of everything else,’ what is the else? I wasn’t sure what you meant, and also when you said it needs to stand alone. We haven’t done F yet, but when we do, we’ll also need to do Bookshark sci F, Bookshark la F, grammar on top and math. But that would be typically for everyone, so I am just wondering what others things you added that made it feel too much or what you’ll take away to do it next year. How long was it taking to do F please? It’s a level we are excited about, and the notebooking in the this is unique, but I am wondering how much time this all takes. Thanks so much,

@ddchomeschool
@ddchomeschool 23 күн бұрын
The charter we were with follows the California state standards, which are basically only US history until 6th grade, and the science standards are very specific as well. I don’t follow standards per se because I feel qualified to evaluate developmental appropriateness, level of engagement, and intellectual development- these things are going to vary by student. I think of standards as helpful if you’re not sure where to start, but they’re just a random set of topics that bureaucrats have deemed most important, they’re not necessarily inherently to be preferred. If that makes sense?

@ddchomeschool
@ddchomeschool Ай бұрын
My youngest 2 (not including baby) are 7&10 and they need me a LOT, so I spend much of the day facilitating their work. My oldest 3 are almost 100% independent, so they’re doing almost everything on their own- I have had to figure out which things work best for them. My 13 year old is great with concrete schedules (like the AO grid) or textbooks that he can do written narrations for. He does not do well with oak meadow materials because they have more complex directions. So I do have to do ELA with him still occasionally to make sure things are being done properly, but I spend most of my time with the youngest 2. When my oldest 3 were younger, I did science and history with all 3 of them in the mornings and they had limited independent work. I start introducing independent work more so in 4th/5th and expect a lot of it in 6th plus grades. I also outsource math once they hit middle school & start them with a brave writer middle school writing class. Does this help?! What age are your students?

The Oak Meadow Facebook group was so toxic. I was part of it last year and noticed as soon as I signed up that the moderator would quickly respond and close comments to on topic questions before anyone had a chance to offer differing opinions. There was very little discussion allowed. Last summer I had a question anyway about using kindergarten or preschool for my 4 nearly 5 year old. I also had a 2 year old. Someone commented that I could do kinder with my older while they were 5 and 2, and go back and do the preschool when they are 3-6 (the range for it is 3-6). I thought this was a good idea. I didn’t mention it, but I consider oak meadow as purely enrichment at these levels, I use different things for skills. Well the moderator commented that Oak Meadow was originally designed so Kinder would start with an older 6 year old, nearly 7 so I should wait a year to start preschool with him and just play. I commented thanks for both opinions, I really like the idea from the first commenter and that I think that might fit my family best. Then they closed comments, which I had anticipated… but a few hours later…THEY KICKED ME OUT OF THE GROUP!! LOL. No slightly differing opinions allowed I guess. 🤷🏾‍♀️

@@ddchomeschoolmaybe, but I wouldn’t count on it. Saints Around the World is a niche book and it’s relatively newish (2021) . Definitely worth trying!

Yeah a little thrown off with these saint books 😂 I wasn’t expecting it from you. lol. We are Christian but not Catholic so we don’t really study saints. We can find Bible Curriculum to help teach reverence, but mostly that is learned by attending church. I only covered St Patrick and Mother Teresa in our homeschool. I also prefer secular curriculum 😅

It’s kind of interesting to think about why saints have become a main lesson! I’m thoroughly enjoying all the picture books all the time lately. 😂 😎

I saw drawings of angels, is this a Christian thing?
@ddchomeschool

Memoria Press is a classical Christian curriculum. However, they have secular versions of their materials available on their charter website. One example would be grammar. So the Christian version might say something about Jesus’s followers and the student has to underline the conjunction. The charter version would change the names to something different, so you’d never know it had been Christian. The Latin is similar, they just completely re-wrote their younger levels to make them secular. We haven’t started that yet but I will update with what I see. I’m not sure which item had angels BUT I did notice that the crafts book I have, which must not be charter, did have an Easter craft in it.

Would you add Explode the Code if you were only using Memoria Press Kindergarten? On top of their Right Start Reading program?
@ddchomeschool

You definitely would not need it. I would only consider it if ETC made more sense to your child/you were using get ready for the code. My student (average) was not able to maintain the pace of FSR at the beginning of K, so we had to slow it down & supplement. I think it’s really going to depend on what your particular student is ready for. FSR is definitely very robust if you get all the pieces. I hope that makes sense!

@@ddchomeschool It does, thank you! I would love to see a video on how you mesh all the different curriculum you use for one of your students. You have a very diverse course created for them, I would love to see how to pick and choose and plan it out.

I was thinking about sharing all of the worksheets my 1st grader did this year, since I have them in a big binder. Do you think showing them and talking about them would be helpful? I would mention which books we read before and why this topic etc. 🤔 that might be a convenient way to do it!

@@ddchomeschool yes! I think anything you share is great! I just wonder how you choose between MP, CMEC, AO, & Waldorf when planning out a year for one of your kids.

That’s kinda harder to explain! 😂 it’s basically which books look interesting & do I think my kids will like, or what have they not covered yet. I’ll think about this some more and see what I can come up with!

We have used BYL several times and love it! For this upcoming year we will be trying MBTP, as I was getting ready to start my planning I noticed that it reminded me of BYL. MBTP does have more traditional school type work, like worksheets to fill out and things, but I felt a lot of them could be done orally. I think we will enjoy it. Thank you for this video!
