Quite a number of fluffs for JW. Maybe it was the first piece on the program and it took a bit to get into full flow. I'm always amazed at his sitting position; almost on the edge of the chair, leaning forward with the guitar pointing to the floor - looks rather uncomfortable. Lucky enough to have seen him in concert quite a number of times over the years, one could always just sit back and enjoy it as he was always in control. With JulianB I was always a nervous wreck as he continually seemed to be on the verge of collapse, exciting though!

John Williams has nerves of steel too , the conductor knew as john walked out he would produce the good s cause can you imagine the pressure, !!!! but he is so incredibly well trained he can withstand it all with ease , just amazing

he approaches with great respect and seriousness the composer whose piece of music he performs. It's something he knew how to do in his own unique personal way. Something that many people may not have understood even after so many years. He always gave me the impression in his performances that he wanted to highlight the composer first (through the Guitar) and himself last. Certainly a great, well-rounded personality, not only in the guitar or music world but also more widely.

Well what to say? Williams isn't my favorite guitarist, but his artistry is beyond question. The notes are always pure and there, even in the least inspired performances. In this case it is more evident the technical precision of Williams, some moments a little mechanical, but in Bach that's more than enough ! So this is still a Prelude, so demanding, and three dances from Bach's Suite IV so clean that many other versions pale in comparison! Also, the sound pickup is that of the time and not so professional, (I guess only from the camera microphone?) but in any case not well mixed: normal cell phone today is likely more faithful. So this remains a professional and nice live Bach on the guitar without compromises ! A lesson after 50 years or so...

First : the Fleta John plays here, is the best guitar I've ever heard, although I am a great Smallman fan... Second: when John plays it, what do we want more ? He is the hero and will ever be...

Can someone help me find this: In 2003, I saw on the internet a video of a Spanish man playing Barrios' La Catedral, and using a pick instead of his fingers. He did a perfect job even though playing that piece with a pick is absurdly difficult. The guitar, if I remember, was very small, probably a lute. Lost the video during the next 20 years. Many thanks to anybody who can point me toward that video again.

If you listen, Freddy Mercury lifted the beginning notes and a descant later for slow parts of Bohemian Rhapsody before he sings "I just killed a man" and before "it really doesn't matter". He was classically trained, so he must have encountered this piece.

Of course they aren’t all playable on guitar, but Scarlatti wrote some 800 of these for harpsichord. All the ones that I’ve heard are quite difficult to memorize due to the near similarity of the variations. They were rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th Century- missing for some 200 years.

What an absolute rare gem of an upload. Williams at his interpretive and technical best, a combination that has yet to be equalled. Fantastic orchestra with maestro Previn at the helm. This, and Paco de Lucía's 'definitive', incredibly soulful version rank at the top...subjective yes, but I think reasonable. Thank you so much for uploading this!
