I like the funny face Bernstein does every time he wants to hear the bassoon cut through.

This wonderful symphony might have been written for your namesake, Nikisch, judging from the little we can still hear and all we’ve read. Arthur evoked immense romantic surges with minimal gestures from hands jutting out from equally immense cuffs. Lenny’s technique is of course quite the opposite but here (and elsewhere) I hear hammer blows, not the mighty Rhine, though in fairness Schumann did not use that title. Perhaps Bernstein had another Wagnerian image in mind - Siegfried’s anvil.

Does anybody know a symphony about the birth, the life and the end of a river into the ocean. That was symphony that my music teacher was explaining as it was playing long time ago when I was 11 years old.

Surely it is Smetana's "Vltava" ("Die Moldau" in German)? Try that. Not a symphony but a relatively short "tone poem" narrating the river's progress from where it arises to when it meets the ocean. It is one of six pieces in "Má vlast" (My country).

I'll be hearing this live on Thursday in the Usher Hall Edinburgh. The Scottish Symphony orchestra with their principal conductor Maxim Emelyanychev weilding the baton. Maxim is such a great conductor destined for great things.

Bernstein conducted the other three Schumann symphonies often, but only conducted the Rhenish here and in a 1960 cycle in New York.

This is a wonderful version. I had never heard this symphony until my 30s, when my parents let us use their subscription tickets to the Minnesota Orchestra. It immediately became a favorite.

Dude even his fun pieces like Carnaval Op.9, No. 14 "Reconnaissance" have like a deep sadness in them That sound starts off sounding like a party, like I'm about to place bets at a saloon, and then suddenly, Morose 💀 But that's ok its just for a second then back to party as the piece ends lol

You might also enjoy Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic performing this work. Not so very different in tempo or approach, and yet.. different. You won't be disappointed, especially in the 4th mvt (Feierlich~Solemn) After a few listenings, that movement brought to mind Hans Zimmer's Theme for the Netflix production of "The Crown". I suspect he likes that one too. He seems to have been inspired by it in it tone, and deportment. Enjoy kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aZ-An5xost-mmYE.html

Many distinguished conductors have faced this masterpiece , but in my opinion no one like Leonard Bernstein has been able to grasp and vividly convey the underlying painful energy which is the dominant tone in all of Schumann's symphonies .
