One of the greatest pianists of the 20th Century, no question. However, I’ve always found his tempo for this way too slow. He misses the simplicity/ song like quality. Would be interesting to hear from him about this interpretive choice !

Миля как всегда, на высоте❤. Интересна эта запись тем что она была записана в период его другой легендарной студийной записи, с Ойгеном Йохумом. Эмиль в одном своих интервью замечал, что записывая концерты Брамса с немецким дирижером «брукнеризмы» выделялись как жирные пятна… и в целом студийная запись сбалансирована по наполнению солиста и оркестра. Здесь же основной микрофон видимо стоял рядом с роялем и очень хорошо слышна нюансировка и красота звучания солиста! Ну и в целом пример , так сказать , без жирных немецких пятен), хотя вариант с Ойгеном мне нравится не меньше! Спасибо за запись🙏, очень жаль что не сохранилось ни одного видео с Эмилем, исполняющим этот замечательный концерт(

Weber was both a composer with an outstanding sense of orchestration, and, which is less known, a piano virtuoso. Here, we czn very well hear how his personal style fits with piano writing.

I have come to a conclusion that this sonata is really unplayable without major textural rewrites. Not enough upper voices the way it is written, and even Emil, with all of this technique, can't bring them out. Feinberg comes close. And Ivo solves the problem by playing it at half-tempo, but this is not really solving the problem . . .

Gilels´ Spiel gleicht dem einer Raubkatze: kräftig und einschmiegsam, je nach Lust und Laune - alles in absolutem Schönklang.

Better or not is not the right criterium to compare these pianists. Both of them were on the highest level with different preferences of sound (Gilels) and ductus (Richter).

Gilels es de esos pianistas que se cuentan con los dedos de una mano y sobran alguno... Es obvio que en ese olimpo está Richter, que vendría a ser la otra cara de la moneda o de la luna.

I think Gilels has (unfairly!) been under Richter's shadow, even putting himself down. Once, when a member of his audience came up said how much she enjoyed Gilels' playing his reply was "If you think that was good, wait till you hear Richter". But, there are a good few things I prefer in Gilels' hands.

Yes, I've heard that same story. I think Heinrich Neuhaus, who taught both of them at Moscow Conservatory and who deified Richter, had something to do with this strange phenomenon.

Όπως παντα υπέροχος!👏❤️ Αλλά τι δύναμη εκφραστική στο πρελούδιο του Rachmaninoff!!! Επική δύναμη και λυρισμός ταυτόχρονα! Εντυπωσιάστηκα γιατί ο Ραχμανινωφ ειναι απο τους συνθέτες που αναγκαστικά σε εντυπωσιάζουν …πολλές νότες πολλές δυσκολίες στην εκτέλεση κλπ κλπ που δεν μας οδηγούν οπωσδήποτε σε ενα αριστούργημα αλλά μάλλον σε ενα φλύαρο έργο με πολλά εμπορικά εφέ! Το ακούς ομως απο έναν Γκίλελς και ακούς πράγματα που μπορει και ο Ραχμανινωφ να μην είχε καταλάβει!!! Ακούγομαι σκληρή ε; Μπορει!
