I’ll never use Leak Seal on anything under 10 years. If the leak is slow/newer I’ll recommend just topping off the system and reassessing within a year. I’ve completed ac renew on probably 40+ systems over the last two years and only seen positive results so far, so I keep offering it. Surge protectors 😂 such a touchy subject in hvac. I usually recommend them for systems under 10 years old, and basically insist on it for mini splits/communicating systems. I didn’t know coil misters existed, and if you understand refrigeration you know coil misters are a total gimmick used to prey on ignorant customers, and actually inhibit the process of pulling heat out of the indoor air. Don’t mess with drop in refrigerants since I left building maintenance.

I find it disingenuous that you use the fact that contractors install these systems as a metric to whether or not they are a good product. It's obviously self serving. The brands installed by contractors are fine, but those brands are well known brands, and only sell through licensed contractors, so your cost is going to be significantly higher. Contractors charge a decent markup for selling those brands that they can't get away with from brands meant for DIY, or that customers can simply purchase themselves. How are they going to tell you that the system itself is going to cost $7k and the labor is going to be $7k on top of that, when you can buy the same system for $5k? Contractors also often get reimbursed from the manufacturer if they have to replace a part that fails within the warranty period, where they don't with DIY systems. As long as you follow the directions on a DIY install, most mini split brands are just fine. Most brands are actually rebranded Midea units anyway, and I don't know that Carrier would be investing in them if they were a terrible product. You may not get reimbursed for labor on repairs, and often the warranty isn't quite as good with a system that isn't from a contractor, but that doesn't mean they aren't good systems. That's just part of why you pay less.

Although there are probably pros out there that want things to break for job security. Most care about their reputation and prefer things to last. So I think it’s a good metric to at least consider. That said, there is definitely a big difference in quality between some brands and systems. Saying there isn’t, just means you haven’t installed enough to know which is okay…

Videos I saw people install the condenser unit too close to the wall. The book I had said if it was wall mounted with the brackets it could be 6" ground mount 12" is required. I think 6" is just too close going to restrict the flow of air no matter bracket mounted or not really need a full 12" at least 24" is even better.

I don't see how a 6 in, carrying 100 cfm, can transition a 8 in, and then there is 200 cfm. Wouldn't the 6 in restrict the flow to 100 cfm? Where did the additional 100 cfm come from?

I agree with what you have said . Now I'm wondering if you have varible speed technology are you truly saving money in the summer time adjusting your temperatures. If you adjust your temperature down when you come home and that compressor that is running at 25% is now running at 100%. Are you truly saving money?

In 2017 I had a double Daikin system installed in my home by who I believe to be the largest installer of split AC systems in the Phila. area. By double systems, I mean that they installed 2 condenser units, and 7 wall units. My systems are the Emdura line, which I believe are considered premium units. The installer did maintain the system for my 5 yr. warranty period, but after 5 yrs. the quoted price to extend my warranty was more than what the cost would be for 2 new systems. The service techs were excellent, but were very poorly prepared to service my system. They were very unfamiliar with my system, and they would all tell me that other systems were much easier to maintain. During that time, one of my units stopped working. They would send techs to my home to replace electronic boards in the unit, but they would fail immediately when power was applied. They finally replaced the whole unit, but the time it took to fix the problem was most of the summer AC season. Every time they ordered a part it took several weeks to get it, since the parts had to be ordered from either Texas or Korea. I just want to share my experience with anyone thinking of buying a Daikin system.

So “Inverter” must have a more broad definition of electronically intelligent voltage regulation, regardless of whether we’re talking about DC or AC input?? Because what had me so confused is that I saw an inverter compressor that had AC as input, and the variable output was DC. I was so confused because I was always told that “Inverters turn DC to AC, and rectifiers turn AC to DC.” So, I’m guessing that perhaps it’s just SO common for inverters to convert DC to AC that many people incorrectly go around saying that the specific job of an inverter is to change DC to AC, yet that’s not accurate (it’s just the only application that these people have seen, so that’s why they think this)?? I’m guessing then that a more accurate description of an inverter is any type of intelligent voltage conversion/regulation whatsoever (regardless of AC/DC input or output)? Especially if a person is mostly familiar with solar power, it really does seem like the ‘Inverter’ is absolutely the conversion of DC to AC (and you will be specific told by many people that that IS what an inverter does). We may have one of those cases here where a technical term is confused between different fields/contexts.

Considering many inverter HVAC systems have DC controls and AC compressor, they still fit in your definition

My Trane Central AC unit is 40 years old. When I turn it on, (summer months) I let it run. No cycling, Cycling kills compressors. I'll let it run until the house gets nice and cool usually in the late afternoon as the sun shines on the front of my brick rancher in the afternoon then I shut it down and even turn the main switch off so there is no power to the thermostat transformer either. I replace the Caps every few years just as a "PM" item as they are cheap, (a whole lot cheaper then just having a AC guy come out and not even do anything) Yesterday it was blowing out 54 degree cold air at the vent which are floor style. I switch all my ceiling fans to reverse or (pull up) mode and they circulate the air just right. My home was built in 1955 so the insulation isn't the greatest compared to todays standards. I keep it clean outside (condenser) and the filters changed inside and the evaporter inside as well. I'm happy with my old 40 year old R-22 system ! I cover just the top in the winter to allow air flow through the unit and to keep the snow and rain out etc.A few ounces of prevention is worth a TON of cure........Stay cool & educated everyone. Peace !

What if the AC seems to be running fine with not short or long run times and blowing cold air; and the tech says the sub cool is low and superheat is high? This seemed odd that there would be low Freon. My evaporator is rusty but seems to be running fine. Could the system still be failing as it does not seem to add up. Filter is fairly new.

More insulation and light blocking are cheaper in the long run than running AC harder. If the house keeps the heat from getting inside, I find it cheaper pre cool the house in cool morning when cheap, maintain mid-day when electricity cheaper, let temp rise in expensive hottest late afternoon, then lower the temp after evening electric rate drops.

The fact that there are so many different brands is the biggest problem with mini splits .They go in and out of business like the ocean tides. This is why I've often said that mini splits are a disposable appliance once it breaks. Lots of time the company that made your mini split is no longer around and you are SOL. Also many times it's cheaper to put an new one in that do any repairs on the existing unit. The bottom line is they are all junk that is over engineered. I never recommend them to customers.

The recharge scam is when someone tells you that the refringent needs to be changed like oil on your car. I saw one news channel sting where they just put dead batteries in the thermostat. Two out of five HVAC contractors tried to sell the homeowner a completely new AC system they said the compressor was bad and R-22 unit could not be repaired. Then news media guy walks out in the room with new batteries and proceeds to fix the unit.

Built our house in Oklahoma in 2006 and installed four Goodman heat pumps, three on the house and one for my shop. Three of those units are still running today. Had to replace one of the house units about two years ago. The new unit (also Goodman) crashed about a year into it's use and practically had to be rebuilt.....new pump and reversing valve. The warranty covered the parts but I got stuck with the labor. HVAC guy told me that the newer units are not of the same quality as the older units. These units are aging and with the escalating economy and the outrageous cost of equipment, I'm really going to have to think about which route I will go as these go down. Hell, maybe go with window units as this stuff is becoming unaffordable.

So this may be true, but the HVAC company in N. TX that initially charged my MrCool Advantage, 4 years later, 2024, is telling me, "No. We won't recharge or check your MrCool for leaks." Why? Who the frik knows! the claim is "it's hard to get parts for them". Um, then why are they being sold at Home Depot up the street by the dozens? And we haven't even determined if it is broken or just has a freon leak. I mean, come on HVAC pros. That's your job to at provide some level of service even if it means, "I know where it's broken and I just can't fix it and here's what I recommend you do". Which might even mean replacing the whole system with a different mfg unit. And not charging me $8000 to replace a $2000 system (which I did myself fully except for the flaring of the lines and charging of the system, that cost me another $400 on top of the $700 I paid for the system. Total. I even sent a message to Daffan (and of course it was a Saturday) and I never got a reply from them about it. A second company said they won't even work on mini splits.

I think that whenever I talk out loud, it's an invitation for people to criticize. Going back a few decades, it would be an anomaly for an American company to rebrand foreign technology but over the interim it's become common. I think our capability has diminished while that of others has increased. American companies can get to market faster and with less investment by partnering with those who've done the R and D. Because business is about business and not forwarding the interests of the country, we'll relinquish some control and some knowledge we'd otherwise have, in order to benefit investors. Can't argue it doesn't "work" in the short term. Daiken bought a huge (acres under roof) HVAC mfg facility in the US. Compared to what it was designed for and once did, they ain't doing much with it. There's a massive research facility within it, replete with amazing testing gear that would put most to shame, which hasn't done anything at all for decades. Dust covers every flat surface, test chamber doors are stiff from not moving, etc. It's very sad to see such a beautiful facility abandoned. I guess it just costs too much to be the leaders anymore. Maybe they were regulated to death. Our country let that happen.

having a sensor in the coil that is tied to the control board will force customers to replace rather than "gas up" there system to get them by until they decide to replace it. it will force them to pay for replacement and even tho it might be under warranty sometimes there is a labor charge....i can see some of this to be wild out in the field
