My sister had BRCA1 and 2. She died. I had the option to have the radical surgeries. I chose to have the oophorectomy as but not mammary gland removal as breast cancer has a very high survival rate. Removing the ovaries in a young woman reduces their life expectancy by on average 10 years. Removing mammary glands interrupts the complex endocrine and lymphatic systems. My favorite thing in the world is to think a BRAND NEW thought; this doesn't happen often enough. In this interview, Masha gave me this thrill more than once. Her stunning perspective - coming no doubt from the straddling of multiple cultures - makes me giddy. Now I'm going to have to buy all her books. What insightful questions, Eleanor. Watching Masha respond to them in real time, with such DEEPLY thoughtful alacrity, was exhilarating. I stumbled upon this interview (on KZfaq), and it is the best interview I've seen this year (it's currently the end of December).
