Wonderful podcast as usual. It is deeply unsettling just how much guys like Douglas & Prebble still delude themselves that their policies didn't hurt people that badly".

It's always fascinating to remind myself of how evil and self-serving the evil white men of the 4th Labour government were, justifying the carnage they caused and the generational impact of the inequlities they've caused, or lit the fuse of in health, income, housing, suicide, children going hungry, family violence, student debt, and more. They are smugly sickening.

TOLL did wonders for NZ Rail as a monopoly - ran the assets into the ground and extracted as much monopoly profit as it could before returning it to NZ for $1. Never sell state assets to a monopoly, even into a market with limited competition (NZ power generation market). NZ is better off with Kiwirail as a SOE (would be nice if truckies paid their full road user costs) & would have been better off with a system optimal NZEB as a SOE. Meanwhile the current National coalition govt continues to subsidise farmers. (no ETS, lax environmental standards) Sorry Richard Prebble, being made redundant isnt the best thing in people's lives. In a recession new jobs don't exist and some families lose their houses or could even become homeless (given the current OECD topping rent/income ratios) Govt sets the policy rules, sets capitalistm, sets the OCR policy & minimum wage. In such a paradigm unemployment is required as is a direct result of govt policy, i.e. the govt is responsible. The unemployed deserve the full support of govt, potentially govt guaranteed jobs, and definitely paid for retraining as done by some Scandanavian countries. Roger Douglas's heart has always been in the right place. He wants to help the poor. But the neoliberal policies simply dont work as have been shown in NZ, UK & USA. We need policy driven by socioeconomic cost/benefit assessment which seeks to maximise wellbeing per capita, not simply looks at the financial bottom line.

The correct policy for rail would be to reduce the Government system to a 1100 mile system. Auckland to Hamilton and the lines to Tauranga and the pulp and paper mills. Wellington to Wanganui ( possibly Hawera) and Woodville. Christchurch to Dunedin and Otira ). The rest would be sold off to third level private local council or private port operators. Mosgiel- Bluff, Woodville- Napier Port and Hawera-New Plymouth Port. The government rail sector would return to the 1947/52 timetable.Eight passengers train daily Wellington -Palmerston North; 8 daily passenger trains Auckland Hamilton , the Wellington Masterton commutter line ( the central NIMT line will be removed it being intended to use the central North Island and Central Otago partly as tourist zones and partly as reservation dumping grounds like Oklahoma or Translyvania in 1941 - Huxley's Brave New World revisited with the same intent) and 6 times daily Christchurch Dunedin. Obviously the Irex ferry should have been retained for overnite service Lyttelton -Wellington. Cancellation fees and saving from closing the line Picton Christchurch ( it is a third world line with 3 1/35 grades and others of 1/50, that means it is hopelessly uneconomic) would provide $800 million to subsidize the Lyt- Wgtn ferry for 20 years at $ 40 million a year.

In terms of power pricing all generators get paid the marginal (highest) cost of the highest cost generator providing power in each hour. Ie each generator is receiving payment equal to or greater than their marginal cost. In no other market does this occur and especially under perfect competition. This is the absurdity of running the power generation market as competitive. A non profit SOE running a system optimal generation system would have been far better for NZ. We would all be paying closer to the average cost of generation rather than in excess of the marginal cost. This is especially true given the 1:1 correlation between GDP and energy use.

Was resilience fully considered.? There was only one line into Northam d where the pylon fell over? Given NZs 80%+ renewals and more in the future the full network needs redundancy in it.

Remembering being proud as a teenager then of our great orator and leader whilst also protesting the introduction of GST as an unfair tax that placed the tax burden more squarely on the low income peoples of New Zealand. So much has gone tits up IMHO by the flacid 'leaders' who people our halls of government and councils now. And dont get me started on world politics and the rise of facism.

Hegel's Dialectical Methodology needs to be understood. Lange understood Post-Kantian ideology and its influence on how people generated knowledge about all things better than most. Muldoon sold NZ to the Lima Sustainable Development Agreement in 1975 after the UK abandoned NZ for the EEC in 1973.

A C-list country, i.e 3rd world definitely. The neoliberal doctrine run in NZ since the 1980's has tried to run NZ on the smell of an oily rag, along with unsustainable immigration has run the country down into crisis. Many other OECD countries run higher tax revenue/GDP ratios than NZ, and also have comprehensive capital gains taxes (CGT would allow personal income tax rates to be lowered and the crises to be addressed) We simply cannot buildout the infrastructure deficit we have, with the unsustainable immigration rate, without imposing significant tax increases or regressive user pays. The net inbound immigration rate needs to be managed down to a sustainable level.

+1. RBNZ can’t do anything about rents, rates and insurance. These are non tradeable. They are a central govt issue. Means RBNZ bludgeons tradeable inflation dumping more people and families on the unemployment scrap heap. Also monopolies and oligopolies just raise prices to maintain profits. A govt issue again.

It makes sense to have a wider variety of housing, from compact 1-2 bedroom units to larger homes for large families. Given how much infill housing has taken off in NZ, medium rise apartments, duplexes and multiplexes would provide more privacy that the homes where everyone is directly opposite and so close together that they are looking directly into each others living rooms, bedrooms, etc.

That's an incredibly kind interpretation of man who along with Prebble, Caygill and cronies, introduced policies that destroyed lives, created an underclass of generational poverty and inequality that we still struggle with today, founded ACT to protect the rich, betrayed the socialist beliefs of his father and Labour, and has continued to unrepentently and loudly justify the carnage.

here's some bad news . deleting combustion engines replacing with electric. where's that electricity come from . dams in the south island . and if the snow stops. the water stops flowing dams don't produce. how many turbo jet engines are running in 24hrs around the globe . 50,000 now ask how much fuel are they using per plane? 1 gallon per minute 10 hour flight is 150,000 litres! a 13-hour flight from Tokyo to New York City, it might burn 187,200 liters. we have sites like wish and temu. sending items across the ocean . I spend 5$ on temu and its here in a week. free shipping = 187,000litres for a product that cost 5bucks let get rid of combustion engines . what a crock of bull dust and iv only talked about planes. imagine the ships on the high seas at any given time . burning mass amounts of fuel. we need security in this country . if the world stopped delivering fuel to us. we would run out in less then a week.. sounds great. back to horse and carriage. no tractors no trucks = no food security . and yet we want to protest climate change to out government .. delete airports . and use steam boats . luxon getting around on a nzdf plane that breaks down every time its needed. that uses 1 gallon per MINUTE. idling on a runway . burning fuel. but lets force every one to buy a electric car. and think weve got enough energy to run the country. going to need combustion engine generators to run the charging station. yeh makes sense heading in winter is when were asked not to charge our cellphones yet the super market lights stay on all day every day 24/7 back to front inside out .. if nz fell off the map and did not exist . this climate hoax crap would still play out... exporting the resources we have to foreign countries for the greed of the man at the top is crazy.. coal exported to china coal from Australia goes to china radiata pine exported straight the u.s no processed here because it cheaper to process it there. BAD NEWS

When are you going to ask real questions about who created the inflation and why there is total failure of the reserve back to perform its duties of price stability and lower inflation? On-going destruction of the lower middle class and non-home owners due to government policy and reserve bank failures. Stop being such activist journalist rather than a real journalist.
