Echoing what most others have said here, Van Cliburn was beyond nice. He grew up in Kilgore TX and made that town his home most of his life. I taught with a friend of Van's who would sit around and drink coffee with locals at a cafe in Kilgore. Van lived with his mom until she passed away. This same friend said he was sitting in Van's kitchen one time and the phone rang. Van said that was someone wanting to know if I would play at the White House next month as if it were no big deal.

I must confesso that I didn't know this fabulous Pianist. Well before my time, he won the International Competition held in Moscow. A Major, Balsamic Pause during the Cold War ! Art, as an Instrument of Peace -- Nikita Krushshev watched the Competition, telling the Juri " "Was he really the best? -- then give him the Prize". Way not recreate a similar Competition with Russia? And Iran?

My mom took us to the Van Cliburn competitions when held at TCU in the 70s, I think. We saw the preliminaries, the piano and string quartet and the Finals with thFort Worth Symphony Orchestra. This story is a story my freind told me of his first concert at 13 years old in Texas which happened to be the Jimi Hendrix experience. This is his story of his flight down to San Antonio/ -- “” 13 years old sat next to the this famous pianist, Van Clyburn, on the trip from Pittsburgh to San Antonio on American Airlines. He was very nice to me, never once telling me that he was famous or anything. When I told him I was an aspiring guitarist he told me to keep on practicing and only that he played piano. When I got to San Antonio, I told my grandmother about the nice man I sat next to with the funny name Van Cylburn she almost fainted! haha! Needless to say it was a memorable trip!

I met Van Cliburn after my mother bought a disc collection by Selecciones del Reader's Digest around 1984 when I was a kid. I started to listen those records a few years later. Such a beautiful collection! My piano professor knew about him but I think Cliburn wasn't playing anymore by then. Now it's great I can actually see him playing and I remember my old woman (who passed away in pandemic almost four years ago) and the beautiful things she brought into my life and I still enjoy some of them nowdays. Thanks Mom! Thanks Van Cliburn!
