Having had a Gretch, my opinion has always been that they were designed for this guitars having a mud switch. Round strings make the gretch guitars sound more like any semi hollow although gretches are carved internationally then slabbed together

If you can, find a copy of the Parlophone 45. It is the only way to listen to this song. Less reverb than the mono mix on the LP. Unfortunately, they did not use it for the singles box that came out a few years ago.

For so long I thought I'd always prefer flats over rounds on any situation, but the solo and riffs on this video sounded so much more alive with the rounds on. Also, I'm coming to the conclusion that a lot of the tone characteristics of flatwounds can be reproduced on a set of roundwounds with a little bit of knob tweaking & different picking and muting techniques, but that the opposite isn't quite as possible.

Did you see Guitar Gear Connection's video on the Beatles' strings? He makes a pretty compelling case for most of their guitars using roundwound strings based on his research. Like John putting Gibson Sonomatic strings (roundwound) on his 1958 325 after installing the Bigsby, or George actually using Gretsch-branded roundwound string sets on his Gretsches.

the Presence control/circuitry can make a huge difference for guitar. It simultaneously reduces headroom on the amp and adds some boost to mid-high range. The circuitry resides between the preamp and main amp stages, so it was fairly unique. And you can dial-in the amount of effect you want. Neat!

For sure things like the money riff sound much better with flats. What's most likely i think is that they had really old and dead rounds on them so they sounded like flats maybe.

Flatwounds for me, especially when it comes to basses (I usually put tapewounds on my bass). I never liked using roundwounds for some reason, probably because they are smoother on my fingers. Its also easier to clean.

You’re not playing the right notes on the 4 note run by George towards the end. It’s a run to E minor so your 3rd note should be E2 not E3. Only the 1st note is E3 because you are in G there. Also not enough emphasis on those strums into Em, Bm and D. I believe that’s Lennon doing those. His style. Listen to the isolated tracks to get the Lenno unique strumming right. Time for a complete redo over.

Cheers. I believe you got it right. -At least, as I have tried the parts. I believe they Kapo'd to capture that great ringing airy sound via the pull-offs and hammers in first position D natural. There may be 4 guitar parts on this record. It seems they used both, first position E, AND first position D, -the latter, via kapoing two frets (as you have shown) to create the final song key of E natural. The more rhythmic parts can be played (as you show) with or without a kapo. The magic is how they arrived at these wondrous guitar parts. I have 5 examples of the recording at different takes. Takes 2 and 5 reveal much, however, the tape boxes also have "first version" and "second version" notation on several takes; -as if they had started a new version of the recording after hitting a problem with "version two" I dunno. They sound like parts of the final record. I wish someone would clarify.
@sampopkin
@sampopkin 2 күн бұрын
You’re right that they started the song in D, and then John capo’d at 2nd fret when they moved the song up to E But Paul and George on lead had to have been WITHOUT capos because you hear the open Low E string note in their solos

 @sampopkin Makes sense. Your video saved time. I copped the missing part less than minute. -Thanks. You did it perfect. I'm old. Saving time is worthwhile. Alas, KZfaq players seldom afford me this luxury. You are unusual. When I look for a part online, I often end up frustrated & giving someone else a lesson. Ugh. Most people are simply not using their EARS. Theory; I grew up poor. I could afford a diatonic harp. I could afford to sing. The Beach Boys taught me harmony. We had a fair spinet piano. I started playing boogie woogie at five. There was ONE piece of sheet music in the piano bench. This was ; -"As played by, Ella Mae Morse & Freddie Slack". We also the 78 RPM. I learned from the 78 & matched this to the sheet music. Boogie woogie is 1-4-5., hence, came The Blues. I got Slim Harpo and LIttle Walter from a local radio station. The only problem I had was trying to get their sound. I had no knowledge of amplifiers. If I wanted to play music, I had to use my ears. Rich kids, with lessons and instruments don't seem to develop the same way. Perhaps, they have too many toys? It makes no sense, but what else can one think? Thanks again for the lesson, keep 'em coming. Can you dissect the earlier Nat Cole Trio sides? How about Lady Day's swing sides? -30s and 40s. The Brunswick & Vocalion sides are best. I can fall in naturally with many of the sides, but ones like "No Regrets" are more difficult. It took me weeks to get Dick McDonough's part right. Fake books are not written for such versions.

It's one of the few post 64 songs where we know exactly what guitar was used for the solo, because George Martin wrote out the notes and it said fender-solo. Yeah the Tennessean Hi-Lo Trons are insanely different from the Gent's FIltertrons. Not only single coils for the hilo's, but super low output and bright
