I knew Kay when I managed the rialto in Joliet il.. He was to the organ ,what Liberace was to the piano. When he played his concerts, he had a 3x5 card on the organ. (No music). I asked Kay what was on the card? He said " oh, those r the songs I'm going 2 play"

His playing is remarkably Brilliant. I wouldn't be surprised he was in the Theater playing for Old time movies and he was the one in the Orchestra pit by himself as he is an Orchestra. Bravo Kay. I also love how the monitor above shows all the keys played during his performance and on which board it was played including the pedals. I just think Theater Organs have to make a comeback. Not many in the world that I am aware of. Thanks for posting this on KZfaq for all to see. I loved it. Have always had an interest in music from time I was a toddler. Played at age 3. I can't read a note but love music and do my best. Kind regards to one and all Merry Christmas from Canada, and Patrick myself.

This man truly knew his way around a theatre organ. He's one of the old-time and all-time greats. What a treasure to have this video of him before his passing. Thanks!

I still get chills & excited every time I see & hear these magnificent instrumental beasts! I feel like a little kid again, sitting in the front row in the theater right next to the.console, just so I could watch the organists work their musical magic.

I have an LP recording of Kay playing the Wicks theatre/classic pipe organ manufactured for Oral Roberts University in the 1950s. He played the same excellent arrangement of "Who" on that.

I think that this theater organ was the ancestor of the synthesizer used now. The human being who created that was a genius and also the player we see now. Thank you for the beautiful music you offer.

Hearing the grand sound of this organ helps us to remember him. Some theatre organ videos shows how the organist would raise and lower the console. As the way KETC movie narrator Jim Kurtcher would put it, Kay McAbee really hasn't gone away. Not for those who loved him.

Back in the mid-60s, I attended many a Kay McAbee concert at the Rialto Theatre, Joliet, IL. His performances always combined great showmanship with gentle....and often humorous....commentary. My organ teacher at the time, Faye Wheeler, often sang his praises. We miss you, Mr. McAbee.

I wish my Granddad was still alive, he was a not thaught but very good piano and church organ player... I'm sure watching something like this would thrill him as I do (or make him jealous maybe, cause he also had that piece of character I believe). Anyway, Kay McAbee does remind me of my granddad sitting at his piano and playing. He couldn't read sheet music, he'd just walk through a place, hear a piece of music if he liked it and played it on his piano without even practising, he must have already figured it out in his mind. Now I can play music but not like that..... And this video of Kay McAbee is one of my KZfaq's very favourites. Rest in Peace, hope you'll meet my granddad somewhere up there. :)
