I had a look at the 1st edition TDoG rules Sawyer and decided not to mess my brain up when it comes to GBACW. I've got a listing of the commander ratings and such and will use use the charts from the box and use homemade AM. You really cheated yourself of most of this battle's fun by "fast forwarding" past Hunter's cavalry advance down the Valley Pike. That early half of the battle was some of the best cavalry vs. cavalry action I've experienced in the entire system!!! Still, nice little backgrounder and history lesson in the lead-up. (But, the U in Staunton is silent in that part of Virginia, and it's pronounced more like, "STANT-in". ;)
@campsawyerАй бұрын
Thanks for the view, Stiglr. I have played the full engagement and it is fun, but it can get long with cavalry skirmishing and it did not even come close the historical action when the infantry was engaged. I really wanted to see how Hunter was able to break Jones lines. As for Staunton, you must forgive me as I am from Massachusetts and we have Taunton, which has a long U in its pronunciation and the only let we don't pronounce is R :-)
@StiglrАй бұрын
@@campsawyer I can see how a Massachusetts accent wouldn't work down in ol' Virginia!! Actually, everyone NOT from the Shenandoah would likely make the same mistake with Staunton. It's part of the rite of passage as one gets immersed in Civil War history!! I'm *still* learning about the odd pronunciations of some waterways (Mattaponi, Ni, etc.) and some of the commanders are routinely mispronounced (the two Taliaferro's, pronounced "Tolliver", Huger (pronounced more like YOU-zhee) and even Heth (pronounced more like "Heath"!! I also find many people seem to trip over Sigel, which you did not, to your credit. I don't know WHERE someone would get "SY-jel" out of that, but some do!!! 😉

Don't take this the wrong way, but as a new player trying to understand exactly HOW to go about doing things such as setting up and executing an effective attack, etc, videos like these don't really TELL me anything other than how the lines advanced/retreated during the game turn. It would be much more informative to actually play through the game turn, so that new players can see just HOW one side was forced back from its original position, just HOW the attacker sequenced his combats in order to make the most of his Activation and force a retreat, etc. All those individual moves and die-rolls would not be boring at all to someone new to the system.
@campsawyer2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the view and good comments. With regard to the discussing on game play I have limited aspect as there are plenty of learn to play videos. I would also reference Hex to Hex channel for some great into videos. That said, I so sometime add in a full play turn so you can see the moves and combat. But I am slow and deliberate with the moves so it can make a longer and some time duller video.

Quick question - why do the hidden units roll on the command table? I though that occurred only once they are activated? This is my first solitaire play with PNA but in France 1940 solitaire scenarios they are all on an OW command until spotted and activated. At least that's how I understand it. Just curious - might be playing it wrong! Thanks.
@campsawyer3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question. This is a "it depends" answer. The standard solitaire rules state that all enemy units roll for commands, both hidden and activated, in 10.4.2 referenced in PNA playbook. This can be overridden by SSR's with a specific command for some timeframe. I also take this further and don't roll for enemy unit commands until they will be needed instead of the Command Phase.

question for you all: tank (any tank) firing at a truck that moves or doesn't move, full of troops. assuming you count range from firing unit to target, cross reference the range using GP type ammo, or AP.. say it hits, what is used as an attack factor to see if truck or halftrack is damaged/destroyed... GP fire or AP fire... what is the defense of a truck... not following in rules how that works and of all videos i have been watching, don't see to much about it...
@campsawyer4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the post. If you are firing GP, you still use the GP attack factors versus GP defense and for most trucks it is 1. Follow the damage results for S type vehicle on the GP Damage chart. With AP, you use the AP attack and most trucks have a 0 armor. This means that you will most likely penetrate and just use the AP damage for the gun firing.

So, a 0 is a 10 in this Vassal module? You should edit the Die roller (in the Vassal editor) to "Add +1" to each result, such that 0s would register as 1s (the lowest possible) and 9s would register "10" results. It's always somewhat disconcerting to see 0s and even momentarily have to wonder if it's a zero or a ten. Anyway, my copy of this is slated to appear tomorrow, so it's nice to get a little preview of the mechanics.
