I am 18 months into trying to taper off 15mg of amitrptiline initially I dropped way too fast and had what looked like manic episodes but were just withdrawal. I'm now tapering way more slowly.. like 0.2-0.5ml per month which I can tolerate. The headaches and insomnia are unbearable. Highly recommend out the Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines book - best money I've ever spent. Every doctor should have a copy. Thanks for this interview it is nice to felt "seen" by a doctor for a change.

I'm just asking for advice please. I have been off of Paroxetine 60mg for 9 months now I took them for three years. I did a silly taper from 60mg to 0 in about one month, much too quick. I'm going through Protracted Withdrawal and it's a nightmare, I'm waking up very early with anxiety and hot flushes. My question is, if you was in my position, would you reinstate and do a more slower taper or would you just battle on and deal with the withdrawal symptoms daily. I have no idea when this Hell is going to end though. If anybody has been in this situation, can you please advise how things went for you. Thanks.

Well meaning GPs handing these terrible medications like sweeties. Its a disgrace, abhorrent especially with history repeating itself after the benzos. I went on them for mild depression 17 years ago. I have just tapered off over 12 months, and am 6 months clean. Still struggling with moid swings, irritability, stress, anxiety and because of all that the depression has returned. Ill never trust a gp again and i always refuse when they try and peddle me something which they will do, without fail for every single ailment going. What's worrying is that I seem to be more informed than they are.

I’m doing a slow taper of Lexapro. When I say slow, I’m talking 4 years. My GP tells me I can safely taper over 6 weeks. He’s out of his mind. I’ve already done a 1.5 year taper off a low dose of Xanax. And let me tell you, it was still a bitch. I have no more withdrawal symptoms from the Xanax taper. I expect to eventually do the same with the Lexapro. Or so I hope.

Vigorous daily cardiovascular exercise, ELIMINATE all processed foods and carbs (minimal carbs), take 5-HTP (after you’re off ssri). This helped me not only with withdrawal but recovery thereafter and with my chronic pain which is from some auto immune thing that no one understands but is probably caused by some foods and my neurotic disposition.

I would like to know Mark Horowitz's thoughts on the 2023 paper of David Erritzoe et al. "Brain Serotonin Release Is Reduced in Patients With Depression: A [11C]Cimbi-36 Positron Emission Tomography Study With a d-Amphetamine Challenge". In the study they compare a group of 17 antidepressant-free patients with (Major Depression Disorder) to a healthy control group. My question would be if the patient group is medication-naive, because if not, that could be impacting the results, and then the conclusions would be questionable. The paper itself says that "The serotonin hypothesis of depression proposes that diminished serotonergic (5-HT) neurotransmission is causal in the pathophysiology of the disorder. Although the hypothesis is over 50 years old, there is no firm in vivo evidence for diminished 5-HT neurotransmission". Erritzoe say that he considers the etiology of depression more complex that just low serotonin, and also that "the data is there to support that (antidepressants) it does have efficacy beyond placebo, for some". Erritzoe also comments inthe same interview (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gN2HZZuf15vVdpc.htmlfeature=shared) that the meta analysis conducted by Joanna Moncrieff and Mark Horowitz, "The serotonin theory of depression: a systematic umbrella review of the evidence" published in 2022, is not complete and has weaknesses.

I was on antidepressants for 10 years. I decided to go cold turkey one day when I refused to go and buy another script. On day three I was in a state of terror, waking at night in a sweat, nightmares and cramping. It was terrible. I spoke to a lady at the chemist who was also a naturopath and she handed me a bottle and said take three a day of these. The next day I woke up and ALL the symptoms were gone. I felt absolutely normal. I continues on these tablets for 2 months then decided to stop them to see what would happen. Nothing! No symptoms and no more tablets. The tablets were called Kalva Calm. They calm the nervous system while the body gets rid of the drug in your system.

I was prescribed Sertraline 4 years ago when I was diagnosed with post-natal depression and borderline personality disorder (after a 30 minute Zoom appointment!). Very little support other than the drugs. I'm 100% sure that I don't have BPD. I had 4 babies in 5 years, then found out my ex-husband is a paedophile! I've never been given a blood test, no therapy. Now I'm a single mum of 4 with no support from medical professionals. I'm trying to slowly wean off of Sertraline because I need to process everything that's happened and can't get in touch with my emotions. The withdrawals are awful! I can't parent like this so will have to get back up to 150mg. Pray for me and my babies 🙏.

That sounds so awful for you, I’m sorry you’re going through this. Of course, you have to put your children first. Post natal depression is very common and nothing to be ashamed of. Ridiculous that you could be labelled with BPD after a 30 min consultation - I’d take that with a pinch of salt and definitely please don’t accept that as a ‘label’ of who you are. You’re just a normal human being who went through a tough time. Did you reduce by more than 10% when you first tried to come off the meds? I.e. 15mg? You could try again at a lower dose and take it really slowly 👍 Wishing you the best of luck 🤞

If talk therapy is better with no side effects and benzos and ssri do not work and are not helpful in the long run then what good is the psychiatry field? They usually prescribe the medication and the therapist/counselor are the one who does talk therapy.

Benzos I don't think it's possible to stop them - especially if uve been on them for years. Tried tapering & thru me into daily panic attacks -- then Dr just changed me from Ativan to Klonopin -- switched one devil for another -- and had withdrawals just going benzo to benzo -- I hate them & wish I had never ever been prescribed -- horrible but now necessary evil if u want to function & be able to work or drive or anything

Many people have been able to taper off benzos successfully. I’ve done it myself. It ended up taking 1.5 years and it was very challenging at times. However, I have been off them for 4 years now and I have no withdrawal symptoms. You can definitely do it. It takes time, determination and patience. Let me know if you want more info.

Im coming off Zoloft on my own. Will take months to see a psychiatrist and my gp wants nothing to do with this. Was on 100 mg, somehow I tapered to 50 mg over a few years with no remembered effects. I just would sometimes take 50 mg instead of 100 mg and eventually I only took 50 mg for several years now. I decided I want to quit completely by tapering. I was taking 50 mg every other day with no side effects. So I decided to try 25 mg every other day but got brain zaps. That was too fast. So I took 25 mg every day for a couple weeks. Eventually I found I could take 25 mg every other day without side effects. Did that for almost 2 weeks. Now I’m taking 12.5 mg every day. I can sometimes skip a day here or there without side effects but find that i definitely need to take my dose the next day to avoid side effects . After tapering from 50 mg to 12.5 mg it’s been about a month, I started to have late onset withdrawals. But i also got a virus/cold that is also making me feel bad. Noticed some crying spells but they don’t feel terrible. A bit of a relief. In general I feel lighter since tapering and has overall been a good experience. I feel like I’m waking up from a weird numbness I’ve been under for a while. Im gonna cruise on 12.5 for a while. Even if it’s only 3-4 times a week, before I taper more. I need to stabilize to 12.5 for now since the withdrawals are just now starting to hit. It’s not awful though and like I said , I feel overall better and a sense of relief. Im just listening to my body and letting it tell me what to do. There’s no way I think a doctor could’ve guided me to do this correctly. I know how I feel. Im determined to take less and less so I’m letting that be my goal. I know I’m not doing this in any typical manner. I just occasionally try a day without and if I don’t have withdrawals that day then I don’t take it. I’ve mostly been on Zoloft for 23 years. I’ve had a year here or there without it. But mostly on it. And I’ve been on it this last time since 2014.
