Vv smart formation and the amount of trust Erwin must put into the scouts to keep following whilst being that split up must be a lot, although I will say if it is even slightly windy when Erwin fires his flare to re direct them they kinda fucked

if there were this many scouts after the attack on Wall Maria, then there would have even been more before the attack. so what were they doing and why didn't they defend the walls and fight the titans when they first appeared?

I really wish we got more time with the veteran Survey Corps. They were all so badass but that was the point of killing them unfortunately.

So for anyone who’s not sure what Erwin’s plan was here’s the step by step starting with his initial theories **forming the plan** Eren is a human who can turn into a Titan. Conclusion? Humans can turn into titans If humans can turn into Titans have there been any other titan shifters? We’ve had reports of how the colossal Titan appears in similar fashion to Eren’s Titan. Conclusion? the colossal and by extension the armored Titans are humans If the colossal and armored titans are humans who are they? Moreover why didn’t they breach wall Rose? Conclusion?they were present to see Eren’s arrival and likely apart of the military If they were apart of the military then who? They couldn’t have been present before the walls were breached. Conclusion: they are hiding amongst the 104th cadets This leads into **the plan itself** Step 1: going off the initial hypothesis that the titans are 104tb cadets he sets up a “honey pot.” (Or a tempting target that is secretly a trap) During the initiation ceremony note how he sets up Eren, the upcoming mission, and the basement. Going out of his way to divulge information. He’s baiting the warriors to attack Step 2: narrow the potential suspects. Erwin goes out of his way to talk up about how dangerous joining the scouts is and how likely you are to die. This scares away majority of people. Those that remain are his pool of suspects as the titans would remain in order to capture Eren regardless of the personal danger. Step 3: amongst the 104th cadets spread them out across the formation and give each of them a different position for Eren to be present. The goal being to bait the enemy to attack the section Eren is stated to be present Tell Cadet A that Eren is in section 8, Cadet B section 6 and Cadet C section 12. If the enemy attacks Section 6 Cadet B is the spy And we see this play out note: how when the female Titan attacks it attacks from the Right Flank and as Reiner, Armin, and Jaen talk they each say Eren is in a different section but Reiner says “Wait I thought Eren was in the RIGHT FLANK.” And just like that Erwin’s gambit has been successful. Any cadet who was told Eren was on the right flank is now a suspect Most notably: Reiner and Berthold Note how Jaen who had Eren on the left flank is removed from suspicion and Armin who discovers Annie is as well but by Step 3 Erwin has been successful. And narrowed down his suspects and now simply needs to weed out the rest. Those who are still under suspicion are separated from the rest of the scouts and sent to the isolated outpost where we see them in the start of Season 2

This was my favorite phase in attack on titan, the expedition of scouts outside of their territory, and how clueless we were at that time, it just felt to awesome and adventurous

The Long-range Scouting Formation is a genuinely genius example of Erwin Smith's military-tactical mind. As another comment put it, it's a giant human radar! The front-most regiment acts as detection, the signal is then given to the commander via the relay regiment and then navigational changes are distributed to all the remaining squads via the command regiment with the elite squads and supply regiment in the center being protected by the rest of the formation. This makes the most sense because apart from human lives the most valuable assets in the formation is the most skilled and experienced soldiers & cargo (in this case being supplies and of course, Eren.) Logistically you could not get a better formation than this in titan territory and it shows why even as a captain, Erwin's squads usually made it home unscathed. It was also another genius move to disclose any/all information about the purpose of the mission and the location of the Special-Ops squad for Erwin had suspected there was an infiltrator in their ranks. This wasn't an expedition so much as it was one big elaborate trap for the enemy.

It's sad when you realize the true intentions of the 57th expidition. the main objective was openly stated as a test run for the real reclaiming of Wall maria, but in reality, the objective was to find spies within his own camp. and heres the kicker.. IT WORKED. by all intense and purposes, he captured the female titan and was planning to open up her nap to find out at the minimum who she was. if all the information the scouts had was all the information, then they would have annie singing in weeks and have found the rats that infested their ship... tho a sad and common theme for the scouts is despite being the regiment meant to get the full picture of a situation they never did. it can be seen with the deaths of each of their section commanders - Section commander Ness was not informed on the plan at all, given that if he was, he'd be right beside Miche and hanji when the trap was triggered.. instead, his side got attacked instead of Miche's, and he was killed, not even knowing that was a titan shifter... - Section Commander Miche died because he didn't know the beast titan was Zeke, and he also didn't know Zeke could throw shit at such a quick pace. he died dicovering titans could talk.... yet again not even realizing it was a titan shifter -Commander Erwin died not knowing what lied beyond the walls. not even realzing there was not only people but an entire world that hated his kind this being the reason for him being born in that situation. every scout up until the victory in shigashiga died never knowing the truth.... yet they still fought

@1:08 you can see about half the scouts took part in this expedition. I could roughly count 110 individual horses and say 2 people per horse carriage

This was peak Attack on Titan. So much better than what's being presented now. Realistic tactics that work against insurmountable odds. Fantastic character interactions and leadership. Seeing all the strongest fighters in the AoT universe working together was when this show was at its best. I wish they would go back to this instead of the time traveling and founding titan bullshit
