I had the pleasure of requiring a rebuild if a replacement vd specifically a 10-17 007. It is a 1.91 :1 reduction transmission. Although I have spent a lifetime rebuilding things as required this is the best representation one could hope for. My only comment is there will be variations to your own vd as us the case in my rebuild. Specifically I had 12 return springs for the reverse clutch and the metal disc with the three notches was required to be mounted opposite that as described in the video. This is because the 12th spring is located as to interfere with the wide part of the odd sized flange. Just a note to be aware of. No doubt has something to do with the reduction gearing or perhaps date of manufacture. Excellent presentation, thank-you!

it's been many years since I worked on boats. What is the benefit or reason for a twin engine boat to have one engine reverse rotation? Excuse the lack of knowledge, always interested in learning. what has to be done for the starter, and the firing order on the reverse rotation engine? is the camshaft any different as well as the oil pump?
@rickgaine34765 күн бұрын
my dad taught me how to work on that engine in our 1964 Luhrs back in the early 70s when I was a child. I have a lot of fond memories from those times. I lost my dad four months ago. Unfortunately, video cameras were not around while I was learning this. thanks for the reminder of this engine and bringing back some good memories.

What's the recommended oil for these engines and the recommended change interval? Do they require any oil additives for the tappets and cam? Old girl sure sounds sweet!

Thanks for the video, extremely helpful. One of my Crusader 454's is stumbling between 1500-3500 RPM, and the other cuts out randomly every few hours like the key was turned, then won't start again for a few minutes. Seemed like some kind of thermal issue. This is very helpful for diagnosing the coil and ignition module.

Yes this is definitely a great video. The frequent break down problems are something that could have been re engineered but left unchanged.

Hi, My 71C started making a clanking noise out of the blue. I hear it in neutral but less in forward. More in reverse. Seems to get quieter as it runs more. Can I send to a video of it? Maybe more fluid? Maybe an additive? It may need to be sent to you this winter for rebuilding.

Thank you for doing such a detailed video on the marine quadrajet! I appreciate the little nuggets of info and rebuilt mine with confidence and your video. Could I use the pull off vacuum and a vacuum gauge to dial it in on the boat. As you know there are no other vacuum ports on the carb?

This video pair is a beautiful thing, my only issue is the aluminum piston is stuck, air moved it a 1/8” but no further. Should i be able to spin it in the cylinder? Can’t do that either, being aluminum i don’t want to force it. Cheers!

Have the same engine and exhaust manifolds. Water was leaking in from the exhaust manifold where the riser bolts onto the manifold, flooding the 6 and 8 cylinders. Thought it was a head gasket

Question: for some reason the vacuum does not release when full throttle and idles rough when vacuum is connected and bogs because it won't allow the big barrels flaps to open. Kinda weird and runs much better with the vacuum disconnected. Carb is rebuilt ,Would you know what could cause the vacuum to not release when opening up the throttle?

I just noticed the input shaft has about 1/2" of rotational play and it def feels like a worn u joint. I'm half way into an already short boating season here in central Maine. Can the u joints be replaced in the boat? It seems like they're inside that bell housing but not inside the main gear set housing. Trying to figure the best way to tackle this without pulling the boat out or pulling the drive out if possible.

Hi Joseph - I just finished having my port side V-drive in my Carver (coastal Maine) replaced - $5k all in, so not a small price tag. The stub shaft needs to come out at a minimum, but it's probably best to pull the whole drive and send to Walter for a factory rebuild before you blow a hole in the case like mine did.
@josephsimanski319220 күн бұрын
@@jimharding9950 thanks for the repy! My port side also. My mechanic says to pull the drive out and he can rebuild it. He says Walter sells the full rebuild kit and that they are excellent to work with and provide good support. Enjoy your season!
