Thank you for your honest review. Paper that allows previous layers to lift is a major pet peeve of mine, and this is sometimes promoted as a good thing since beginners look for papers that will let them erase mistakes.

My husband and I both have one of these sketchbooks but have different experiences. I don't like it for watercolour as I like lots of wet in wet techniques. However, my husband likes it for his style (he has an acrylic and oil background). I have tried other media in it as I don't like to waste paper. It works well for gouache, but I really like it for inktense and water soluble graphite. I think this is why people are so split with their opinions on Moleskine. I won't buy it again but my husband might.

Also wondering about embroidery on Khadi. I’m scheduled for a three day Embroidery on Paper class. Has anyone tried this on Khadi paper? I’m taking some scraps with me to try on a book cover. It’s FOCUS ON BOOK ARTS conference in Oregon. It’s internationally attended and is hosted biannually. So next Conference will be in 2026.

This is anexcellent source and I will keep and refer to. I had no idea it should be handled like fabric until I did some eco dyeing with it. It held up beautifully. I got some beautiful table runners with Camilla blossoms. Now you’ve shown that it is indeed a beautiful paper. I have a lot of it bc I could afford it. I’m making sketch books with Eco dyed papers for the covers. ❤❤

I really like it if I'm painting small details because i love the way the paint lies in little cobbles or mixed paint separates, especially cobalt colours. It gives interesting and unexpected results. Definitely not if you want large smooth washes. I love Fluid 100 small 8x8 inch block pads which are 💯 cotton and at this size cheaper than moleskine

Would you share a video about your tips when making watercolor?
@emmamariamakes3 ай бұрын
Sorry if I’m wrong but I have a feeling it’s just because you choose a really soft squirrel alternative. Those hairs are not meant to be elastic. And the squirrel can hold a lot more water so it needs more water until they look more like they form a point. The versatil should be like soft sable, more elastic than ultimo but still not meant to have a really pointy outcome. I think the perla or prado might be more your thing for your illustration style as they have m more snap.
@hungryforpaint3 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching and for the recommendation 💕 I am aware that squirrel doesn't really have much snap and requires more water. I used plenty and generally experimented around with them. I don't really have much issue with them being soft. As for the shape, both the ultimo and versatil are described by Escoda as pointed on their website, the photos show a perfect point and the company's representative that I talked to confirmed that they are supposed to come to a sharp point.
@emmamariamakes3 ай бұрын
@@hungryforpaint I think the point is less important with soft brushes like that because it will lose its point as soon as you push against the paper but you could try the hot water method to see if the hairs will straighten a bit.

My Reserva set of Escoda travel brushes has sat mostly unused for well over 2 years since purchase. The #2 out of the "box" pathetically imprecise and thick for lines, the others not better than my $30 set from Asia, and that Escoda set is now selling for between $400 -$1000 Cad. Absolutely nuts. I'm opting now for W&N, Princeton Velvetouch, Tintoretto ....@@hungryforpaint

I've been using Escoda brushes for years now use almost all of thier product lines and one thing i can tell is thier quality control is not consistency i've bought a lot of artist sets and some of them a like the way you show it in a video and it's really pissing me off and some of them a really really good like a Perla that from Joseph Zbukvic set i bought.The three brushes include in the set are so fine so taper like a needle point after a year or two. The quality consistence being up and down maybe because it's being a handmade brush ?(but i don't think that's a good excuses for making your products to be like this) but some other brands that said more like mass product still put one of the best ever like Da Vinci, Raphael, Silver etc. after this point of being alot of dissapointment in their products i think i'll switch to more affordable brands and not gonna buy their products anymore. p.s I have some really big issue with the Ultimo mop brush after they release the ultimo evolution line they secretly reshape their brush bristle and they never annouced or anything. You can look it in the video from Jay Nathan watercolor p.s 2 But to be honest some of their brushes is really really good for the one that think the whole brand is not worth the hype i think i could actually recommend the Perla brush it's so sharp like a needle sharpest in all of brushes i've ever use after 2 years in my collection.

Thank you so much for your input! Very valuable insights. Altering a product without announcing it and stating it clearly in the product description is a big no-no! And quality is key. If it's inconsistent and you never know what you're gonna get, it's a deal-breaker for me.

My issue with Arteza and the reason why I don't buy their products anymore is the inconsistency in the quality of their products. They have some decent stuff, and then they have even more bad stuff. I have their Gouache paints, and they are pretty decent beginner paints, imo. But then there are some papers and also the watercolors, which are really bad. Dunno, how their Acrylics are, never tested them. But yeah, I guess that's the problem when you get your stuff from different chinese suppliers. Inconsistency in the quality. Luckily there are much better, affordable options out there than Arteza. But I guess when you get 3 thick watercolor sketchbooks for $20, you can't really expect anything good from them. I have some affordable wood pulp watercolor sketchbooks (300gsm tho) from T-mu, and these things take every watercolor technique like a champ. No paper crumbling, no feathering, no nothing. Which means that Arteza is probably using even cheaper paper for their books.
@hungryforpaint8 ай бұрын
Interesting insight, thank you! I've never ordered anything from T-mu, mainly because their ads get in my face so much it's annoying and I generally try to avoid buying the cheapest stuff from China. But I guess you can chance upon products of reasonable quality on there too!

I had a set with some barroco brushes I think (the ones with a green barrel) and they were nice at the beginning but now don’t hold a point anymore. It looks that you'r a little bit severe with Moleskine. It's ofcourse not the ideal paper for wet on wet technic. For that type of watercolor you need at minimum a 300gr, but as you know Moleskine is 200gr only. However when traveling I like to use such a quality sketchbook, not to make wet on wet classic watercolor, (that's for my workshop), but making watercolored loosed sketches to have a souvenir of what was my trip. I use 3 sketchbooks A4 a year for this purpose, imagine with 300gr my backpack will be more heavy and the size much bigger. Also having a full Moleskine collection of all my trips is a plus! Expensive but serious ! Anyway, thank you for your videos, I'm fan ! Michel
@hungryforpaint8 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment! For quick sketches and fewer layers of watercolours without caring to much about smoothness of the wash etc, Moleskin is totally fine! 300g is perfect but thinner paper can still perform nicer than Moleskines (in my opinion), for example the Global Art Materials sketchbook that I made a video about, or the Pink Pig sketchbooks that I'm working on a video about 🙂 BUT if you love your Moleskine, that's amazing and that's everything that matters 💕 Thank you for watching, I appreciate your input
