I checked a local big box store, these post are 16 gauge and they are recommended for use with a wooden fence. Quote: " These posts are perfect for use with wood fence panels."

So if you’re going to run that trim down each post on the outside of the pickets, why not just screw the pickets then use the silly adhesive and brads on the trim?

@@Julsran that's why they should've gotten pressure treat, a post hole digger and fill it with cement. That $20k they could've spent would've gotten them that knowledge and experience.

I funnily enough stumbled on this guy's channel recently. It was the video on a garden room or something like that. It became immediately apparent to me that really nobody should be listening to this guy at all. I kept hearing the phrases "good enough" and "it'll do". 😬 Yeah, no thanks pal. I want things right. Not "close enough ".

Good god he isn’t scared of kickback. Freehand cutting on a table saw is wild. One cut is one thing but all the cuts you have to make for a half lap… Why not just use a miter gauge?

Biggest thing to keep in mind for homeowmers is to do it right. It can be a lot of work and unfortunately can get expensive but if you do it right, you and everyone that lives at the home will thank you 15 years down the road when the fence is still standing, but standing strong too. 💯

The real test for anyone who puts wood in the ground… is do they know the difference between UC4A and UC4B PT lumber? If you use UC4A (what they sell at every lumber yard off the shelf) then it will likely rot off in 5-10 years, maybe 15-20 in a dry area like where I live. If you use UC4B treated lumber (like they use in engineered post frame foundations) the lumber will last 70+ years in the ground. Is this necessary in every circumstance? No, obviously it’s not. But if you didn’t know the difference to begin with, I question if you’ve actually done research or only listened to the “old timers” about every single process on how to build a fence, a deck, a post frame building, etc. I’m also a fan a metal brackets made for bending moment loads, etc. but sometimes a post in the ground is better, depending on your application or availability of materials. I guess my issue is, if you’re going to mock Jeff for his easy DIY methodology (which is fine too in many respects) I’m hoping you educate your audience on different treatment levels and analyze the pros and cons, effective time frames, and applicable situations. If you do this, great. I’ve just found that very few people ever mention the UC4B or UC4C options in PT wood. Everyone just assumes all PT wood will rot in a few years with concrete in the ground.

whats silly about all his stuff is it saves very little time or money. Just do it right the first time. Question you had mentioned pre staining the wood would prevent gaping. Are you setting out all the boards for 10days then stain each one before installing?

I don't often agree with Jeff. But I agree that if you prefer Greyed cedar you are crazy or lazy. I'll add cheap. You stain, paint, clear a cedar fence you add years to the fence, and it always looks so much better. I understand your point though Joe. You shouldn't insult a large portion of your client base. I also 100% agree that if you don't address the post at and just below grade, you are wasting your time trying to add life to the main part of the fence. But a finished fence looks better. I don't think very many people disagree. I think most people are cheap if they hired a fence company or lazy if doing it themselves. I personally am both cheap and lazy. I want to save on labor so I would build my own fence. I'm lazy in that I don't want to do it again for many, many years. I'm also cheap in that I don't want to buy more fencing material for a long as possible! I would build my own fence and take steps on the posts at the grounds as well as finish the fence and reapply religiously.

I am just a DIY'er. But IMO ... I see the following: 1. 2 hinges not enough. Use at least 3, and check the load rating of the hinges; 2. I would use PT wood or cedar and stain, and use "cut and seal" at all cuts; 3. I would use 6x6 for posts; 4. Make sure screws are properly sized - most hinge kits have crappy screws - not long enough; 5. He attached one end of the fence to an old post that looks wobbly - that post should be replaced; 5b. I agree with you - plumb those posts from the start using braces and keep checking throughout; 6. He is using a "compression brace" on the gate its oriented correctly - but orientation should be highlighted, and he really does not need that hardware at the corners if he were to construct it correctly; 7. He should really grade the ground underneath the gate to ensure year round clearance when using; 8. It looks like he completely filled the post hole with quickcrete before adding water .... it should be noted that he should just fill to a couple inches below grade - then fill with water so it meets ground surface and agitate;
