To be fair….the concept of concubines was to ensure a male heir. Emperors did not marry for love and their empresses were often important strategic allies to ensure loyalty from an important, rich, or powerful noble clan. This would sometimes result in an empress who was infertile but the arranged coupling was necessary to maintain the alliance between the two families. Hence the need for concubines. Personally, I loved this movie.
