Great video! I'm surprised you didn't mention the number one reason I use and design dark mode: "color accuracy". When you have an image surrounded by white pixels there is light bleed, which changes the luminance of parts of the image. This is why video and photo editing software usually has a dark background. To me this is why tinting the app icons is so upsetting. You use a dark background which makes true colors easier to see, and then you ruin the colors on anyways.

Maybe it's because of my astigmatism, but I find way hard to read in dark mode. It get blurry and my eyes get strained faster. In light mode i can just read more naturally.

I use an extension called Dark Reader and its set up to dark mode but I really lowered the contrast. And I also bumped up the sepia. So no, I dont pick dark mode or light mode. I chose "gentle chocolate" mode, it's really pleasing and easy on the eyes

I'm not an expert, but customization is great. it allows for users to pick what better fits them and less people get upset. a great example of that is accessibility options: not for everyone, but if you want to you can pick something that helps you

this is not becoming lazy. it always was. we just don't remember the lazy things, and when we research we only read about the remarkable things, the ton of lazy things around it we just ignore... but the dark mode is clearly better, paradoxically.

Offering a setting is very much not universal design, because a large part of the userbase doesn't have the ability to change settings. The only real solution is setting Hotdog Stand as the default color scheme and hiding a setting that disables it deep enough in the options menu to force the user to read most of your optional features.

It's not just screens. Books, plays, anything that you're staring passively at, you blink less. Or staring intently at; passivity isn't essential and, in some cases, maybe better. (Intense video games can have you strain your eyes to keep them open so you don't miss a crucial cue, for instance.)

I loved the video. Very good explanation. If you allow me, I would like to make a small correction. Dark mode only helps on the battery life of OLED and similar displays. As you mentioned oled is becoming more common nowadays, but the de facto standard is still IPS which benefits from brighter colors. Cheaper models using similar technologies that share the benefit of lighter content. Let me explain, while OLED uses a technology that makes each pixel (a dot in the screen) to change color and intensity individually. In this kind of displays you have "true blacks" because the pixel is effectively turned off On IPS and similar technologies it is the opposite. You have a white back light and then each pixel has a RGB (red green blue) filter. Using electricity you can change how much of each color the filter will block. In a simple way exposing white you have all RGB filter turned off and the light passes all. To get black you need to block all light enabling all filters (and spending more power and consequently have worse battery life) To conclude, as you mentioned, I don't believe it has nothing to be with ergonomics or health but rather with personal preference and even occasion

As a (now retired) job counselor who had to learn this all FROM BOOKS, I am glad that you had computer resources, but it looks like perhaps you had so many resources that it gave you some "analysis paralysis." As a counselor, it was both fascinating AND sad to see you going from a happy, healthy young woman to a nervous, physically sick young woman within a half hour on my screen. I hope that you were able to recover from all this. And your advice at the end is exactly what I told people who would come in to see me professionally. Well done!

Finally someone confirms my thoughts! I use light mode when I need to be efficient. I focus better on reading in light mode, so I use it for document creating programs, art programs, messenger apps and so on. It's easier for me to orientate myself in light-mode. I do use dark mode for aesthetic purposes like on KZfaq where I don't need to read a lot. I get tons of (usually mocking) comments on Discord for using light mode and they just refuse to understand. Also, I never use my devices in a dark room. It's always a lit up space. Almost everyone I know doesn't understand me despite trying to explain. Plus, I really don't care if one uses light or dark mode. They shall use whatever they like.

How is dark mode better for the battery? LCD technology works by restricting the amount of light passing from the backlight through the screen. The backlight is always on, and you have to pass an electric field through liquid crystals to block the light. Which is to say, dark mode should be _worse_ for battery life.

Getting light in your eyes wakes you up, so you should use dark mode at night to become more sleepy, making it easier to fall asleep on time. This video skips over that by saying it's still up for debate whether the colour of light effects sleep. Maybe the colour is up for debate, but the amount of light is not. You'll get sleepy later, if you use bright screens at night, or have bright lights on in the house.

About whether dark mode is better for legibility. It's not, if you do strictly white text on strictly black backgrounds. There's a portion of the population that will get "light bleed" in their vision (maybe it's a form of a corona, idk) when the contrast is too high. So if you're doing a dark mode interface, you should be using slightly grey text, not pure white. (I learned this at my job, where I don't even do UX work, we just seem to have some internal guidelines on presentation slides that focus on accessibility. Kinda cool.) Personally I prefer dark mode when it's done right because things like notification counts are usually saturated, bright colors with white text in them, so both the notification symbol and the number are easier to read for me. But it's still not ideal because it's still not implemented quite right.

The blinking thing is SO true, I developed a problem with dry eyes and vision because I spent too much time with bright ass lights in my face back when I was a streamer. Turns out if you don't blink enough, the glands that secrete the various bodily fluids that make up tears and the other stuff coating your eyes can dry up on the surface and clog, leading to those secretions not getting out and doing their jobs, AND inflammation and soreness from the backed up glands. If you find this happening to you, do what my doctor recommended: warm, wet compresses on your eyes for at least 10 minutes per eye, at least twice a day (preferably 3 times.) If possible, use a sanitary compress, and/or sanitize your eyelids before and after with some Avenova sprayed onto a makeup cotton pad. Don't make it too warm to the point that you hurt yourself, of course. This helps soften up the clogged surface of the glads in your eyelids and stuff. Then, with clean hands or a sanitary cloth (how about that makeup cotton pad I mentioned?) gently but firmly rub your eyelids from the base to the end, like you're trying to kind of guide toothpaste out of an almost empty tube. This helps particularly clogged glands get unclogged. And during this process, try not to wash your eyes with tap water right from the faucet, since your tap water may have amoebas in it. (For my part, I would just boil some tap water and put a washcloth in it, then strain the cloth so that it wasn't too sopping wet or too hot, and used that.) After doing this for a couple weeks it helped a lot, now I only have to do it once in a while if I get lax with the care of my eyes, and by care I mean intentionally making an effort to blink more, and also taking periodic breaks to look away from the screen at something distant for 20 seconds, then closing my eyes for another 5-10, just to give my pupils time to relax. It's better than paying a premium for Systane eye drops!

I've been using dark mode wherever it was available since way before 2018. My eyes are too sensitive to light, so it was uncomfortable to read for extended periods of time on a bright screen. If the letters were a soft gray instead of stark white, even better. I remember using accessibility options to invert the colors on my phone when I had to read a PDF. E-ink devices are also a life-saver, but I didn't have one back then. Now I mostly toggle light mode when I find the colors on the dark mode uncomfortable, whether by design choice (I'm looking at you, WhatsApp) or just Dark Reader not being able to deal with some webpages. Bad design and companies trying to sell useless stuff as innovative have existed before dark mode becoming popular. To me, this Apple dark mode icon update just feels like a custom icons update... which I guess some people find cool. Now, in other comments, a lot of people are saying "keep everything on light mode, there won't be a problem with sudden bursts of light". My problem isn't changing from a dark app to a bright one. I tend to keep my phone on the lowest brightness in which I can still see things comfortably, so usually white will still look dull in comparison to the world. But the world is usually too bright, too. I have trouble reading paper books if the paper is white. I often have to keep my curtains at least partially closed during the day. Some days I can't turn the lights on at night because it'll be too bright. On a bad day, even dark mode on minimum brightness still feels like it's too bright, and I'll have to look for ways to dull the screen further. Before OLED, it just wasn't really possible. If I ignore it and try to exist in a brighter environment, it won't be just my eyes hurting for a while before getting used to it, it'll eventually develop into a splitting headache. Yes, I use "light mode" on my e-reader, but it also allows me to use a much dimmer light than my phone. So please don't go around judging people and saying they are having trouble with light mode because of incorrect configuration in brightness or contrast or something else. Everybody wins by having the option to choose what is most comfortable for themselves.

The biggest advantage of dark mode being integrated in every website, is that from a distance you can´t tell if someone is on something like KZfaq or a porn site 😁 All jokes aside, I never really got into dark mode, aesthetically it's pleasing, but aside from code editors were it help pop-out the color syntax and make it more readable. For all other things it casually worse. In light mode it's easy to have multiple shades of gray (with a tint of color) for various components on a website, allowing your eyes to pick and choose which sections to put the focus on. In dark mode you can´t have these contrast differences, which makes it harder. Secondly what annoys me is that it only takes a few minutes looking to a dark mode design my eyes adjust to it. and then switching to something that isn't hurts my eyes more, then looking at light mode in a too dark room.
