Some really cool ideas! My '17 RT is just a fantastic bike although long distance riding isn't my forte'. It's a superb commuting machine and I can ride almost all year with the heated grips and Sargent seat. Just went through some minor hell changing out the burned out headlight bulb (put in an LED...MUCH better). Access there is horrible, just FYI, have to remove some side fairing parts.

Thanks Braind! I changed out my front driving light to an LED and then I changed out the left and right high beams to penetrating yellow LED last summer, and in both of those cases I had to get on my knees and reach in with my arm! I’ve upgraded to a Russel Day Long Saddle for my daughter’n me. About to list that Corbin Double Heated Seat For Sale, BMW 12RT ‘14-18, and LD riders will get first preference! Any one interested? Jim, just saw this and it was inspiring. I have not tried an Ironbutt ride yet, but plan to do so soon. How did your riding gear hold up in the rain on that trip? Have you changed anything up since then?

Hello Mr. Hutchins. I’m very delighted to get this inquiry from you! I had a mission in mind and that was to get to the University of Iowa for a meeting on short notice, so that was my focus. As for what I used and how I got there, The Tusk hand guards are definitely something that can help whether the wind affect on your hands and still manage to keep you cool, and I’m sure you saw that I was wearing old style bicycle gloves. The Aerostitch top is still what I use for trip such as this, it’s very formidable. I had two sets of rain gear either frogtoggs shell, or a Bmw rain suit, I think I used both over period of 44 hours. I forgot to mention in my epilogue, low ankle, loose fitting socks will help with circulation, I’m sure you saw the air pillow, and don’t forget your hydration apparatus. There are other IBA 1.0 K and IBA 1.5 K videos underneath my name, so check those out! See you out there some day soon Mark!

On the rain part, does that mean the Gore-Tex in your Aerostich jacket isn’t up for the job and you have to have two additional rain suits to make up for it?
@jimsoque4380
@jimsoque4380 2 ай бұрын
On the rain part, my aerostitch are about 6 years old, I learned later that you can re- scotchbright them to make more water repellent. But, I always travel with two sets of rain gear just in case, as well as ankle gators, 3 gloves, and 3 kinds of eye protection. 😊
@4940markhutchins
@4940markhutchins 2 ай бұрын
Sounds like a wise thing to do. I wear a Klim Marrakesh and add liners and layers to make it 4 season. It has a water repellent treatment, but my rain shell is a Klim Forecast Gor Tex that works so far, but living in Utah and Wyoming, I don’t get the rainfall you do.

Just happened to come across this video . Nice job . You make it seem effortless. That was a big task . I did iron butt 1000 twice on a rigid with steel seat when younger and didnt know i was doing it lol . I was just trying to get where i was going as fast as i could . Now im older by a longshot and i will be planning to do it on record but on a 30 year old electra glide this time with a seat and shocks . Cheers to you and keep enjoying the world on 2 wheels.

Well Jim I had to kick a little bit that you were cold in 64° weather... Of course I did notice your coat did not have the inner liner on.... I put a sweatshirt underneath my coat with the liner. For rides that are in the 40 degree area.. Heated sweatshirt. And some riding pants for less then 40 ... Guess we all tolerate cold different... But for instance my hands get cold very... Easy.. The hippo hand considered event you I have heated grips and wood guards ...😅

Hey David, Good question! They are a rear facing mirror turn indicators wired to the front turn indicators . When I’m in traffic And want to signal to change lanes, often the car slightly behind you cannot see your intentions because they may be in front of your rear facing turn signal. Having one on the mirror ends let’s them see you intend to change lanes. It’s just one of these with double stick tape as a mount. www.ebay.com/itm/386096389861?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=7vmfcwhlqhy&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=q_cJHHKOR3G&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Inexpensive and will probably save your life one day! Hey Jim - this was interesting! I'm glad to live vicariously through your video so I don't need to do this! The longest trip I've ever done was 843 miles - returning to Mn from Ok a few years ago. My trip home to Wi yesterday was just over 700 miles, but as you referenced the windchill can really beat you down in the morning (was 45F (53 degrees at 85mph)). Was much better after I stopped and put on my rain pants. Ride safe- Cheers!

Have you ever run out of fuel without using your fuel cans? I've all over the country, and with a bit of planning I don't see it happening, ever. I found the weight of carrying extra fuel pretty much negated the actual need for fuel ...Of course if you are traveling in North Africa, forget my comments...LOL

Enjoyed your video. It reminded me of all the accessories, time, and money I spent on turning my R12GSA into an incredible long distance riding machine. I just sold it yesterday and bought a new to me R1250RT. I’m keeping a minimalist point of view for this bike; I found that most of the accessories I bought had limited use for the majority of my rides. Liked and subscribed!

I just completed a Saddlesore 1000 ride. While I am glad I was able to do it, and of course, any excuse to ride is always welcome, I found having the time constraint takes away from the riding experience. Always concerned about stop times. And of course I was exhausted the last leg of the trip. Curious as to why you keep doing these Saddlesore 2000 rides. Thanks for the videos! I enjoyed them.

Hey Jim: I have really enjoyed your content. Your rides on an RT are impressive. I moved on to a GTL a few years back but sometimes miss the RT. I live in Western Canada near the Rockies, so if you're ever in the area, definitely look me up. One quick question I do have though, is what have you found to be the most comfortable riding gear for these trips? I've gone through a few brands in the past, but am looking to try something new this season. Any advice you have would be appreciated. I really like your heated gear plug-in you installed as well. Definitely going to be putting it on the new bike (I ordered a 2022 K1600 but production delays now so will likely still be on my 2012 for most of this season). Cheers again!

Hey James, let’s start with seamless Reebok undergarment, top for me is a long sleeve, socks that are above the calf, the Columbia Mens hiking boots, the Newton Ridge II Hiking boot, fingerless leather bicycle gloves- old style, change your foam hand grips, good sunglasses, the Schuberth C3 World - flip up helmet with The SRC Cardo communication system, a nylon fishing gator for your neck and head. Also, a two piece Goretex riding outfit; mine is Aerostitch top and Sedici pants, both of mine are 1 size larger than normal to accommodate under garment layers. Finish it off with your favorite Custom seat (mine is Corbin Leather Heated) and an AirHawk pillow. Hope this points you in the right direction and keep us posted! 🏍🏍🏍

@jimsoque4380
@jimsoque4380 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Roly and group! Thanks for the note! I did some checking and my specifications were incorrect. The Primus Spare Fuel Bottle is 1.5 Liters, not 1 liter. I carry two of these, and if I went so far to go Bingo on fuel, I could have 3 Liters, or 0.8 Gals, or approx 37-38 miles to get myself out of trouble and find a fuel stop. I found one link and this outfit is from the UK and they advertise on eBay. www.ebay.com/itm/253170033251?epid=15015780283&hash=item3af21c2263:g:ZR4AAOSwC6haop6D Of note, in my tool bag/emergency supplies, I also carry a 3/4 inch dia, 5 foot long clear vinyl hose [HomeDepot] to use as a 'gasoline siphon' if I were to encounter any MC rider that needed fuel on the side of the highway, something we should all be prepared to do for our brethren. Thanks for the inquiry Roly and hope to see you out there some day.
