I saw it coming. The Mule showed you right from the Beginning on, that hes not ready, not willing to pull. He went always away from the pole. More Groundwork, pulling Trees and when hes comfortable, then put him in front of a carriage.

I saw extremely predatory behaviour with the guy hauling that mules back end around. I also saw that the lower back right leg had a mark in it as though the chain had hurt it in the past on that leg. If these guys had stopped and given the mule that was resisting a moment to process and then used some pressure and release on the out side flank to bring the mule in straight I think they would have had way better cooperation from that mule. Some natural horsemanship would have really helped in this instance. Firm, fair, and friendly works. Predatory pushing and manhandling doesn’t work. That mule just taught that big strong guy that the mule was even stronger. Train for cooperation not force.

That guy with the shirt that says “Coach” on the back…..is rough with them. Mules are very sensitive animals…you can’t treat them roughly. I’d run away from that guy too.

The mule on the left was nervous and upset from the beginning. It was not ready for hitching. This whole disaster could have been avoided if the handlers had exposed it to the wagon gradually over several days and in an enclosed space, not out on the road. Now that mule will be forever afraid of the “monster chasing it. People are no match for strong, healthy mules when they run away.

Loosen your lines! When they turn in like that, pulling the lines makes it worse. Let the guy heading the team pull them forward by the bit.

Should have had a short piece of chain with two snaps in each breaching ring . Would have stopped them from turning inside out. Been using that for years on even my best broke horses . Really good safety measure even if you don’t think you need it there will always come a time when you do.

The lesson here: animals are intelligent living things with feelings, just like us and should be treated that way. Animals are not objects or tools for us to use, think of them as people

How, in the name of God, did neither of these fellas get kicked to death?? They were standing behind both of them! Isn’t that rule 1 with all equines, to neverrrr stand behind them? Especially when they’re ornery like these two mules. Insane.

I always put a (I call it a jockey strap) between their butts. Keeps their asses (no pun) together when hooking and backing. My team is always nervous when I first hook. They take off at a trot but within one to two hundred yards they settle down. That's why I always take em in a circle before I let anyone aboard. Like they say "if you ain't never had a runaway you're either lying or you ain't been driving very long. Ask me about the llama incident.
