I think that some pilots never practice enough diving coordinated 360's and so they don't feel confident when faced with the need to do them close to the ground.

Hey Greg! I am a private pilot thinking about getting into paragliding. I took your advice and went on the BHPA website to look at a few accident reports and I found that all the cases of the type of accident that scares me the most (collapse at low altitude and/or landing approach) happened during moderate and turbulent conditions. How would a PG pilot go about making sure they NEVER fly in turbulent conditions?

Hi Greg, This video could have been a lot shorter (unlike my comment). Compasses for flying in clouds? Wtf! For heavens sake, why legitimise being in the air in these conditions by outlining strategies for surviving. There is only one good option and that is to be aware of the weather forecasts and to weigh-up the consequences of making the crazy decision to fly in conditions which would equate to something like driving the wrong way on the motorway. Just so ridiculous that people get caught out in these outrageous situations. This comes from a pilot who has been teaching paragliding, flying tandem, for over thirty years and is Qualified S.I.V. I am still passionate about our sport and I’ve seen too many avoidable incidents some of them fatal…

I was on my tandem wing and it turned me straight into the hill I hit the hill pretty hard and I was pretty far up I was probably about 150 ft in the air I felt my brain hit my skull it didn't knock me out but it was a hard hit

Broooo Did you read my mind? Some days I love this sport. I launch, and it's just beautiful. Others, I just can't enjoy it. Massive anxiety. The weird thing is, the higher I am, the better i feel. Sometimes it's like I have to fly for 15, 20 mins, nervous, anxious, etc, and then everything in me seems to just settle, and I can focus on flying and enjoying the challenge. It never happened until about 3,4 years in. I never felt fear at all, it all seemed very safe. But after about 4 years, the fear came. Now I wonder if I'm making poor decisions. It's very weird. One of the issues is not doing an SIV 1 I can't afford it and 2 I have bad shoulders and no strength. I don't think I could actually pull a collapse. It's those amazing flights, views, launch areas etc that keep me coming back. I dunno. Probably need a psychiatrist

Do the same for recreational motorcyclists, you will find slightly lower numbers but still in the same order of magnitude, at approx 1,5%/yr for 15k miles/yr. Smokers have a probability of 15% of dying over a lifetime career of smoking, and yet so many people still smoke. Bottom line is that we are in a constant lottery, for thousands of different bets at a time. Excluding the biggest risks boosts the probability of living a longer life, but it may also flatten out the intensity by which you live.

I tried this with a small toy wing (about a meter wide) I used condoms as the gas balloons. I needed smaller ones for the rips so I went to sex shop and asked for 6 extra small condoms. When I went to pay with my CC, they told me they need cash for transactions under $10. So I was hunting around in my wallet, and the bloke behind the counter looked at me with pity and gave them for free. It was pretty funny

Random theoretical question: if one carabiner broke could the reserve still work? TheY bridle goes to a single central point on the reserve anyway . Thanks

On the last one, I think one possibility is to try to unclip on of your carabiners. Ofcourse easier said than done.

I understand your point, I'm about to start hang gliding lessons and I went back and forth for a while. My heart was always in hang gliding. I tought to myself that it's not how many times you go out that makes you happy but the memorable one that fulfill you. Just like snowboarding on the mountains, when you have the one perfect memorable ride, it can be with you forever!

As someone with 5 years of Hanggliding experience, do you think id be okay going with a high b wing like a Phi maestro? Of course i would take it very easy with the wing and not push it until I'd have many hours on it. I want to do Paragliding as well for the practicality and portability... And also the relative ease for cross country (which I really want to do more of) compared to HG and greater opportunity for air time in lighter conditions which we can't really stay up in with HG. Thanks if you answer this. I've been watching tons of yours and other videos and doing much research.

Have a hybrid, Kona 2 (24sqm) I bought a Solos harness. I am headed back to Oludeniz and not an actual hike and fly pilot, just a 56 year old looking to ditch the weight. This helped a lot! I adapted it and my full size fits with room for my helmet! And the weight difference... Oh my knees are yelling all colors of thank-you!
