I honestly need some advice. I had a root canal done on one of my molars around 5 years ago. It's been perfect ever since, but during the treatment was one of the most painful experiences that I've ever had relating to my mouth. The endodontist had given me 3 shots of lidocaine when i kept telling him i was in pain, but it did next to nothing. Im about to get another one on a different tooth soon, and am almost having a panic attack thinking about it. Unfortunately, im pregnant so they can't give me any oral sedation or laughing gas. What can i do to not flip out in the chair? Am i going to experience the same thing again?

I am desperate for some real dental advice!!! :( To anyone that can spare their time and expertise: I had a Root Canal 4 months ago on a “hot tooth” molar #30 that was so sensitive, I couldn’t even be numb the whole way. The procedure itself was traumatic and painful. About 5 weeks ago, the pain came back. I went to my dentist and they suggested it was the crown being too big, they adjusted and the pain came back days later. I went in again, and they adjusted the crown further, insisting it wasn’t an infection. Pain, again, came back days later. Finally they took a CT Scan that showed a canal was missed, so I had a retreatment done later that week. For the first 3 days, I felt absolutely great! Then the pain came back worse than ever in the middle of the night, so bad that I went into the ER for a stronger painkiller. I was desperate for a 2nd opinion, so I went to another dentist that morning and he prescribed me steroids for inflammation, and a narcotic to help me get through the next few nights. The pain significantly subsided over that week, and the “hot tooth” feeling has finally gone away, but my tooth is still sensitive to touch and I definitely can’t chew on it. Today was my 2-week post retreatment check-up, my endodontist at my regular dentist office took another CT Scan and sat with me to show what she looks for. She insists there is zero infection present (she prescribed me antibiotics just in case) and that the root canal looks successful. She said although it may be frustrating to hear, she really wants to save the tooth and to asked me to wait 2-more weeks to see if it “heals”, as retreatment can be more invasive than the initial root canal. At what point do I go for extraction? I’m able to get by the day with regular Advil at this point (before I needed tramadol to get through the night) but shouldn’t I be concerned the tooth is still sensitive to wiggle 2-weeks after treatment? I should add, the man that performed the root canal to begin with did NOT perform the retreatment. I absolutely refused to go to him being he has rough hands and zero sympathy with trying to get me properly numbed. I appreciate anyone that’s taken the time to read this today,

@nataliem7671

@@soundoverdose3134 Yes! It’s still very painful to chew on or even touch. All my endodontist can keep telling me is to “wait and see” if it heals, but I know in my gut this isn’t normal. I’ve opted to pull the tooth out tomorrow and go for an implant later down the road.

@@nataliem7671 but if you decide to go with an implant that means you would need a bone graft from either yourself or a donor. Then that means you have to wait months for it to heal before it gets drilled into for the implant to thread itself in place. Are you sure you wanna add more complexity to solving this? I'm going in for a retreatment today and will see how it goes. Will be trying my best to avoid getting an implant

My dentist did give me the option to see an Endodontist, but he strongly recommended extraction. I had a huge cavity that formed inside my number 15 molar, which was damaged from bruxism. The structural integrity of the tooth was compromised. Not to mention, the tooth was severely infected. The pain ended up spreading to other teeth, into my brain and sinuses. It was the worst pain I've ever experienced. Sometimes, you don't have a choice to keep your tooth. With implants now being more financially accessible to everyone, a root canal is no longer the only option. Implants are a permanent solution and will probably last a lot longer than a root canal. In my opinion, once a tooth is structurally compromised, extraction is probably the best choice. Especially since a root canal weakens the structure of the tooth. Of course, everyones situation is different. I'm getting a root canal on my number 2 molar this Monday. Thankfully, that one can be saved.

I'm a general dentist for over 40 years. I've probably performed about 3,000 root canal procedures. I'm thinking well under ten patients, maybe half of that had enough pain that they even mentioned pain at the next visit or called me right after the procedure. I've personally had root canals on 3 teeth, all molars which are a more complex root canal procedure. I never a second of pain during the procedure or afterwards. The success rate of root canal procedures is 97-99% which by any standard is excellent. My theory as to why root canals have such a bad reputation and are the go to subject of standup comedians is human nature which loves to give bad news and get you jacked up. If I perform 1,000 root canals and one person has a rough time I guarantee that you won't hear from the 999 telling you, "Let me tell you about the great pain free successful root canal I had." You'll only hear from the bad experience.

I just got diagnosed with internal resorption. The teeth that are affected were damaged when I was little in a car accident. Dentist was able to fix it because they were pushed backwards in my mouth but since they were new adult teeth I guess they were able to save them. 21 years later and I get the diagnosis. I'm not sure if this was the reason for the problem, but it seems like it's linked. If not, then I'm not sure of another cause for me except the infection that was found with it.

@Waterpassion thanks for the response! Do you feel any pain or sensitivity? I was diagnosed with internal root resorption after some tenderness on one side of the gum. Tooth feels fine otherwise no pain or sensitivity.. options are oral surgery, cut gum open and fix from outside plus root canal, plus only 70% chance of success with no guarantee over 5yrs.. otherwise extraction.. I'm wondering what will happen if I just left it. When I ask questions to specialist, they seem unforsure as there isn't a lot of knowledge on this currently. It's frustrating.. and the last thing I want to do is pull a decent tooth or do a root canal on something that mat spontaneously stop on its own, or last many years still.. but I don't want to cause damage to surrounding bone or tissue if that's a risk to leaving it. No one can give me straight answers.

@@jeff_9074 honestly I'm about as lost on this situation myself. 😔 I didn't have sensitivity except bleeding while brushing. They kept telling me to brush more, they'll get used to it and stop bleeding. I'm like, how? It's been blowing like this since I was a small child... Anyways, my canine that's beside the problematic teeth lost it's filling a couple years ago and the dentist refuses to refill it because he's a different dentist than who actually filled the cavity. That's not his reason but it's mine. Anyways, it just recently became sensitive and they really want to extract it. It's been 6 months to 1 year since he first diagnosed me with these issues. I look at it this way, if it looks okay and it feels okay, let it be. Maybe increase the mouthwash or something for any infections or plaque issues but besides that, I wouldn't bother with it until it's necessary.
