I’m confused 🤔 Your place a proper engineered adjustable post removed the cracked piece of lumber, made it worse! put it back in and removed the engineered post! I think you Americans do things a little differently to us European carpenters. Remove post, Add footing with reinforcement, Install engineered post, Make a casing out of old lumber post with adjustment hatches and a false bottom, two short ends to compress when screwed. Install casing over new post, Leave 12.5-25mil from grade to prevent water absorption and adjustment, Leave 5 mil on top for expansion/adjustment Caulk with flex seal, if you like.

So you took a post that was doing its job, took it out and poured green concrete under it didn't. Then didn't even wait 20 days for it to cure. Then trimmed the post so that you could shim it back up with quarter inch shims.SMH... Great job

That is normal in timber framing as this is a 6x6 that is about 3 years. The issue comes in play when the "check" is encroching on the center of the timber. These are only 3/4 of deep

Ok, so, your pad needs to be thicker and wider. Cut your post exactly, use existing joist runs to slide into place. Plumb and brace post with boards that span the hole before concrete so you dont bust up your pad with the rebar. Presecure post at top. Recommend placing a piece of galvi sheet to separate post from concrete. Once concrete is set you can remove metal post and finish securing new post. Or, you can just pour concrete correctly and put in another metal post. Check with local building code.

So why do we need permits?? You never really answered. I mean, if the person who built the home was 4'9" why the heck would he need a 6'8" opening? Permits are nothing more than another way the Gov taxes the people, and id say unjustly taxes us. I mean considering that there is suppose to be no taxation without representation, but who is representing in the dispute between building 'Codes'? The inspector is representing the government, and we would have to pay someone to represent us (ie electrician, contractor, etc). It is a money racket and a scam imo.

If you had messaged back without the ego you would have got a different response than me telling you I didn’t need to listen to you explain why you used the method you had. It’s also ironic you would even claim I’m the one who thinks he knows everything while you’re out here bodging work then telling people to go watch a video where you explain why you’re right. I have BIG question why use a piece of wood that has cracks in it for a load barring pillar?? Should the house shift during a wind storm it could shatter. I mean these cracks are huge they are on the top and bottom of beam there's one in the middle on the orher side that beam is a disaster waiting to happen.
@HighPeaksHome
@HighPeaksHome Ай бұрын
Well the BIG answer is: all solid timbers crack. Timbers in the axial position with cracks is not a problem unless they go into the core of the timber these are no more than 3/4". As for why wood, well all of the moisture issues this house has been solved, and well... timbers have been used for hundreds of years. In fact this house had several timbers that were 130yrs old and were in fine shape I ended up reusing them in other locations.
