This is pretty neat, but its very unlikely that the flint is going to last more than 1 refill. After depleting the stock gas on a bic lighter there is only 1-2mm left of flint (new flint is 5+mm) and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an easy way to replace the flint without breaking the top mechanism. Personally I strip the flints from the bic lighters for use in zippos.

The flints in bic lighters are insanely large. They last a long long time ... multiple refills ... I'm not a fan of Zippos ... too high maintenance for me.

And you don’t have to make the nozzle flush with the bottom of the lighter if you go to the truck Stop and buy those lighter on a leash things. The Bic slides down into a rubber mold that’s about 1/4 length snug so you won’t see the bottom of the Bic. And you fasten the other end of the leash to your pocket or belt and you can let it go when you using it and it snaps back to your belt like a key-back. I just snapped at some dude who called you boring. Look your comments. Old people save lighter in Later dude!!

Hey bro! I buy my nozzles from eBay. I used to be able to buy just the nozzle but like you said you cant find them anymore. So I buy lighter parts. I buy them sometimes 25 at a time. I m a lighter and flashlight freak! I smoke cigars so I have a torch lighter in every room in the house and they sometimes break down and sometimes I take them apart and can’t get them back together so I’ll take the nozzle out of it and make another forever Bic. I have so many lighters that they WILL last as long as I live! Lol

Thanks for the tool and video. On first install Kea seemed to use "Auto collect option data" which seemed to dish out my router IP as DNS. When I disabled this options and pushed out the correct DNS servers and domain name / domain name searches, despite having restarted the service and disabling ISC it was still dishing out the router and no domain name (tested on iphone and windows). I had to reboot OpnSense firewall to get it to all come up correctly. Anyway - awesome migration tool - thanks

I didn't actually do an in-place upgrade on mine. I run OPNsense in a virtual machine on an ESXi hypervisor, and I wanted a clean install of OPNsense so I backed up my old install, created a new VM and installed version 24 clean though during the install process I told it to grab the config from the backup and everything just worked ... but there was no attempt to migrate anything of course since I didn't do an in-place upgrade - which is why I wrote the program ... to help me and others quickly get their DHCP statics moved over to Kea. ☺

In my opinion, no lighter compare's to a Bic in terms of the solid build, the way it feels in your hand, the sheer reliability of getting a flame in every strike ... even the texture (or feel) of the draw of the thumb when spinning the strike wheel ... has no parallel out there that I have ever found. I've used Clipper and I agree 100% that those are great lighters ... but it's not a Bic ...

Bics are a unique lighter. They really do set the standard in terms of quality. If Bic sold their disposable lighter in a refillable model that would be great! I was in the United Kingdom a few weeks ago and they made it a law that all lighters must be refillable, so you can't purchase a lighter at a gas station that isn't refillable out there.

Thank you thank you thank you! You deserve thanks for skipping past the tedious stuff that so many other KZfaq how-to videos needlessly contain, largely because of either ignorance or laziness on the part of the individual who made it. It's so refreshing to see someone who _can_ be bothered to learn the most basic of video editing skills, and I don't mind anyone taking a little bit of pride in doing so. On that note, I even enjoyed your making it clear that you are specifically, intentionally putting the tiny required bit of work in, to avoid wasting my time (and, I presume, to also take advantage of a knock-on bonus effect, and avoid leaving viewers with the impression that you're just another inconsiderate DIY doofus, like so many others on YT). Hell, that doesn't even address that you're displaying what I think is absolutely the best solution for re-using Bic lighters; thank you for sharing!

There must be a way to refill from the top jet. Without doing any of this. Maybe its making an adapter for the refill canister that has a rubber o-ring. Then push it down onto the gas jet whilst holding down the 'go' button till full. I'm going to go try.
@MikeSims70

People have done it, but they often waste a lot of butane and the lighters never seem to last very long when you do it that way.
@waynoswaynos

@@MikeSims70 I tried it at the top but it did not work. The jet was way too small. I ended up buying another lighter after trying to insert a car tire valve. That's an interesting idea. Have you tried adding more coils? I think it would help a lot to have a finer "resolution" in the rotation. It also looks like each coil is simply being powered on/off when it may give a smoother transition to have each coil ramp up and down with a sort of sinusoidal duty cycle pulse width modulation. That way it won't be as jerky and kick itself off, like handing someone something you want to make sure they have it before you fully let go. So only at the peak of the next coil in the rotation does the previous coil turn all the way off. Or something like that, those are just my initial thoughts anyway

Nice idea. But it's impossible to find any retailer that will sell such valves at a reasonable price.
@MikeSims70
@MikeSims70 Жыл бұрын
I agree, it can be difficult to find valves for less than $10, which can cause the perceived value of such a modification to be too small and then unworthy of the expense and the effort. However, The valve can be transplanted into another lighter, which means that for the cost of one valve, you can get potentially years of use out of it. Also, if you look around, some places sell much smaller valves at smaller prices where it would even not be necessary to chip out the wall inside the lighter because the valve won't extend into that space which makes the job of installing it much easier.

@MikeSims70
@MikeSims70 Жыл бұрын
I agree, but in this instance, I did not have a drill press and even I did, its a difficult object to secure plumb and centered under a press. Also, since the amount of force I apply to the drill to get through the plastic is so very minimal (and intentionally done at low pressure), a slip would be not only rare, but also it would have little chance of causing any damage as I would have been easily able to release pressure before the bit even moved past the lighter edges.
@seasidescott
@seasidescott Жыл бұрын
LOL, good idea in theory but c'mon,,, got holes in my head, why not my hands? And the drill was still rotating when it went into the hand?! Oh my! But isn't that how drills work? The real danger is when drilling into something hard in a tight space and getting your hand or wrist jammed up from the torque. This soft plastic poses no danger and too tight a vise would possibly deform the plastic slightly making the hole and slight oval and less tight. But who has a vise at home who doesn't already know how to drill safely?
@MikeSims70
@MikeSims70 Жыл бұрын
@@seasidescott Yes, definitely. The biggest risk with the drill is making the hole too big or malformed ... if someone was actually capable of injuring themselves doing a project like this... well ... perhaps hands on hobbies aren't their thing ... is all I'm saying ... maybe something a little more their speed like .. bird watching ... or maybe a nice book club perhaps ... ;-)

Your statement is accurate, but this is not a project relegated to tweakers only. It's been years since I made this video and I've gotten feedback from a wide spectrum of people who are interested in doing this for a variety of reasons. Perhaps the most common underlying reason is "Because I can" - like a bucket list item ... some rely on the utility of it, others just think it's cool and the discord the entire time has been amazingly satisfying for me (even the disagreements) and entirely unexpected when I made the video. I thought MAYBE 100 people would see it ... boy was I completely wrong about that.
