I was a second man at Banbury depot,in the 1980s .Some of The drivers knew the road to Crewe and down to Eastliegh,they also had amazing traction knowledge,we used to take a 33 to new st on sunday afternoons,and i also went down to Eastleigh with a class 40 early one morning with Driver Ron Ankers!!!

Actually, the top speed of class 43 is 148.5 mph, the top speed of the 390 in 140 mph, so class 43 is faster

trains can’t do 140mph on the main line in the uk they can only do 125mph that includes the HSTs

That train was certainly worth turning out to see. I went to Oxford and Banbury for the return trip and was rewarded with a high speed run through Oxford as they were making up for time lost at an earlier PW. slack. I then went to Banbury and must have been standing right behind you! That footage, plus the footage from Didcot Railway Centre, is on my Channel if you'd like to have a look.
