Follow-up: I opened up the nest tote today and found one last live bunny- aka ‘lucky’. I also found a larger dead bunny, assuming the snake killed it, but it was too large to eat it. So hopefully Lucky will be much larger and more mobile by the time Mr. Bullsnake is hungry again. I really should of relocated him yesterday. I just like big bullsnakes. Going to need to tighten up the rabbit hutch!!

May 5 - 11 days later I checked the splits. One split and two beautiful queen cells but the other didn’t not have evidence of a queen cell, so I added another frame of fresh eggs

Yours is a realistic setup for me! Love it! I am just starting out with meat rabbits. I picked up my first three a couple days ago, a buck and two does! I have been trying to decide between cages and colony, I live offgrid and in the interior of BC, lots of predators. Seeing your setup makes me realize that I can do a similar setup and the rabbits won't freeze in our winters.

In Part 2 - we will make sure each queenless split gets a frame of freshly laid eggs (0-2 days old). A queenless colony, presented with freshly laid eggs will start building queen cells so that they can rear a new queen

Last year we had 4 does and 12 babies all pinned up together at night with no issues. When they are a few weeks old it probably won’t be a problem, but right now they are still only 10 days old
