Great talk with lots of takeaways... Big takeaway for me was giving yourself an out as an editor ala obligations etc as I've pulled 17hr plus edit sessions in the past as editing is my favourite thing to do and when you get in that flow state with the creative juices flowing it's always hard to walk away (intended irony ha ha) but I've also suffered back pain as a result so I've come to realise with age that life balance is very important and with it, time management. Another great video and I loved that you both graciously gave time to the other by not talking over each other or trying to finish the others thought etc.

Wow! Tony what a genuinely beautiful authentic video, I was hooked from the start, whilst hooking up a 2nd monitor and playing this just made me stop at times and sit, as the emotion involved and your genuine life appreciation for things that have happened on your journey thus far. Awesome gratitude! Your channel deserves way more traction but you know what you're doing et all... Hope you don't throw the towel in as yes it's undervalued, for now, maybe not always and your content is quality. Your sincerity of making a channel of quality rather than chasing subs, likes etc to create financial gain shines through. I stumbled on to your channel as I too have found anomalies sourcing editing work on YTJobs, things that just didn't add up ala project vagueness and $1000 to refer someone etc. I find it bizarre that some people supply links to give you a walk through on how they do their videos, as I believe in your quote of, a good editor should be able to watch content and know how certain things were achieved and if they've never created that certain effect, they should know how it can be done. Thank you for this video and others that I've watched today AND have an awesome day!🙂

I can't edit very well myself mostly because i can't get the motivation to do it so i'm looking into getting a editor and im not sure how much to offer. It's mostly nice little touches like subtitles, effects, some keyframing on some things if i specify that i need emphasis on it but it may become more common but i will probably experiment with it a little. I dont think i will ask for any revisions because any editing that's better than mine will be good and I'll be open to any ideas my editor has to make the video entertaining. the more basic editing like combing through footage, adding the voiceover, the end screen and screenshots on screen will be done by me so how much should i offer for 1 hour of footage generally? I only wan to make 1 video a month for now and make more in the future. i do want to offer a good pay but i can only go up to about $200 tops

Wow, just found this video and want to say a huge thank you to you and Mariah for sharing her experience as a female video editor at the most well-known tech channel! I am also a video editor, working on videos for 3 channels now (on of our channels is 'TheFigCo', and it was useful to know about experience in MKBHD team, workflow and work life balance. I'm only 1 year in this profession, never thought I end up as a video editor, but it was always my passion. Our 2 editors are using DaVinci Resolve, and I'm the only one who loves FinalCut and I'm grateful that it's okay haha :) So thank you! That's an interesting journey and so unusual that Mariah has like a 9-5 normal schedule. I personally work remotely but I love it, built my own discipline so now I can handle my tasks. And also trying to fit my own youtube channel into this schedule )

Amazing video! It might be the editing style, but I think it would be nice to see more personality in your interviews. Right now, it feels like I'm reading a blog post or a Q&A with very little interaction between you and your guests. There's a lack of reactions, laughs, or personality. I watched until the end because the questions were really interesting and detailed-great job on that! However, adding these extras would add more color and make longer videos like this more fun and engaging to watch. The Colin & Samir channel is a great example of what I'm describing. Thank you for this video again, Tony!

Thank you for this video! I am going through the same thing as an editor, and I am currently burned out. I have no idea how to get out of it, but I start having issues with starting to work at all: from someone who worked 12+hr a day to not getting started; if I take a weekend off to work on my personal life stuff then I am almost behind with work; I don't sleep well nor enough, and then I have a rush and I do in one day what I didn't do in 3 days but then I am having a hard time again. Trying to find a balance now too- hope you are better and if you got any thoughts on how to balance things let me know!

Your math is correct but location is wrong, buddy. These numbers are not for you or for me but for cheap guys from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan etc. They are killing the market. They can even edit one 10 minutes video for 10 dollars including giving the project file to customer. These remote jobs killed the industry. I am a video editor myself. I started in 1997 with IMMIX TurboCube which probably you don't even heard before. Then I edited with Video Toaster, 601, Avid, Premiere, Quantel Harry, DPS Velocity, Vegas, FCP. Now I am making money from video QA for a big player. Again, these numbers are not for people living in a 1st world country. Example: A subsidiary of United Nations offered 1000 dollars to a friend of mine for a very complicated video editing project. Of course she rejected. If they could, they would go to India, they can find people to do that job for 50 dollars, trust me. But they will find someone willing to do that maybe for a lower price. Why? They do not care about quality and they do not know what quality is. Back then, software and hardware was expensive. An NLE suite price was starting from 100.000 dollars. Just because of price drop, everyone considers themselves video editors. No sir, you are not. You are an idiot who knows how to use a software. You are not an editor. You are an idiot with a computer. Cheap software, cheap hardware, cheap people. That's it.

Thanks for the video, dear, do you think mac mini m2 ram8 will work for editing 4k 60fps iphone13 videos with premiere? Or am I bothered because of the RAM? Each project is 30 to 70 gigs (about 3 hours) of raw data, which takes about 15 minutes and less than 2 gigs. Thank you for your guidance🙏♥️

@@TonyStoodios I always enjoy listening to editors who have a passion for what they do. Nix’s story and the effort you put into making these episodes really proves that passion. It’s very inspiring. I grew up watching Nickelodeon so it was really entertaining to hear Nix’s story. I especially enjoyed hearing how her enjoyment of editing and networking helped her navigate the editing job landscape. I also found the section where you guys discuss Work Life Balance to be very helpful for myself who’s starting out. Also I enjoyed the graphics. I find it inspiring that you put so much effort into these episodes even after a hard days work. Thank you for bringing us this type of content. It helps. Looking forward to the next one.

thank you so much for this video tony. i have the base 8g ram m2 mini with a 2 tb external hard drive to keep the mini as "empty" as possible. i purchased it for the obvious basic browsing, normal home use. but recently my family have been taking more vacations and i was thinking of buying an action camera. would my base mac mini be ok just to edit short 5-10 min 1080p, 1440p or possibly 4k family adventure/vacation videos on imovie?
