Is there any chance to show the comp process in Nuke too (preferably in free non-commercial version)? Otherwise, really amazing tutorial series on whole process! I really appreciate the part for rendering setup in Maya/Vray, especially the render layers part. All the comp tutorials out there show the build in Maya and then they just skip basically the most important part say something like "oh, and now we just render it all", then skip and proceed to go into comp software but like why you suddenly have multiple exr sequences all separated there ready for comp, what was done, the hell means you render it separately.... So yeah, thank you for showing entire process and explaining it very clearly, good work! ;)

I would if I used Nuke, but I've only comped with AE. I also rarely comp anymore, so I'm unlikely to make more dedicated videos on the subject. Thanks for the compliments though, and I'm glad you found the tutorial series useful.

Could you please tell me why you chose to bring the VDB into the scene instead of rendering the effect in embergen and compositing it? I have a smoke simulation in an animation I've done and am trying to figure out the best workflow. The smoke simulation has several things colliding with it as well as being occluded behind a pot that it's emitting from. My biggest concern with bringing it into Maya is wont look the same as it looks in embergen with the particles! Thanks in advance
@CGStirk2 ай бұрын
The dust needs to interact with the environment and the ship, which is more difficult to fake. Also, the ship occludes the dust at the back. It's possible to render from Embergen and then comp back, but it's not what I wanted to do for this, especially that the point was really to show how to use render layers. I agree that it can be difficult to get the same look outside of Embergen, though.
@sarulaplays68612 ай бұрын
@@CGStirk Thanks for the response! Do you know if there is a way to bring your animated objects and camera into Embergen and render an exr seq that occludes your object in the correct place? Almost like a render mask? In your example it would occlude the smoke behind the ship? Hope that makes sense!

Doesnt the beauty pass have all thise passes already baked in? So adding afditional "copies" in top just makes them more intense? Is thwre a way to render those passes separately without noise in the same way that the framebuffer is compositing them internally? Thanks!
@CGStirk3 ай бұрын
Yes, the beauty is most of these passes combined. AO is additional, in this case. However, you don't use the beauty with this compositing method, so you're not adding intensity to it, you're recreating it. Not sure what you mean by rendering without noise. If you mean denoising, then yes, but this tutorial doesn't go over it. Actually this whole series is pretty out-of-date. The materials aren't even PBR. For denoising in V-Ray, you enable the Denoiser AOV and then you need to enable denoising on each separate AOV.
@MHM4V3R1CK3 ай бұрын
@@CGStirk thanks for the quick response! I've been trying to figure out how to build a composite of a CGI screen from scratch in compositing vs starting with a beauty/combined pass at the bottom of the stack so I can have total control over each layer's influence. Feels like a powerful way to do it but I've only ever seen passes come out noisy even with noise pass driven denoisers built into modern render engines. The only time I've seen something close is in vfx breakdowns of blockbuster films but often they are still using common render engines like crazy and would like to know how that is achieved.

As long as the fractal noise is added to a matte layer and not the text itself, you just change the text color or fill in the text layer.

Not sure if you mentioned it or not but do you think this workflow/layer rendering would work fine for Arnold > After Effects? I've cooked a beautiful scene for Pwnisher's Eternal Ascent... But I'd really like to render my scene out in layers, at the very least I'd like my two characters to be separated from the environment, but would also be cool to render even more passes... The scene also uses Ai atmosphere, I'm wondering if I could render a fog pass the same way you rendered the clouds..? Not sure because I'm pretty sure I would need an alpha channel/black so I could set the blending mode to screen and I'm praying that the characters shadows will still be cast!

Arnold AOVs have different names, but it's essentially the same workflow. Same for the render layers. I believe Arnold has a shadow catcher material.

That's because if I follow your same steps, from render in vray to composite in after effect, the image shows darker then my Vray Frame buffer. Thanks in advance

Thanks! You can still use the plugin, and the results should match exactly. Double-check that the comp itself is linearized. However, in the latest versions of AE, you can use their built-in OCIO. When you import the frames, right-click them and select Interpret Footage, then make sure they're set to ACEScg.
