I adore how slowly he thrums the main theme... he really draws the beauty out and makes it all the dreamier!

The comments on this performance, such as polished. magic, seamless, are unusually perceptive and spot on. However, it was also slow, fussy, subdued, and eschewing bravado. Assets in those days, when he was so different from the establishment, but liabilities nowadays since the musical world is no longer dominated by Soviet-trained technicians. It seems to me that all the hallmarks of the latter Pogorelich can be found here. On another note. this etude suits small hands. Many teenagers play this very well. The all time best was the young Ashkenazy. Reserve your judgment until you have heard that one.

Dang is now a Canadian piano professor. I am sure he will be bemused and amused by the shower of praises on what he would now consider a bold immature rendition. Someone said reckless; I agree. He gave it all, like a David against Goliath. This performance at the start of his career seriously lacked weight. The tone was sometimes forced and ugly. Yet, the sense of desperate struggle is apt. The fragile Chopin probably played like this. This was a poignant performance, given his horrific background. His Russian training gave him an invincible technique, but besides the lack of weight I mentioned, there was also something critical lacking. As pointed out by the others, the Polish spirit, or what Chopin is all about, was crucially missing. At the time, Dang didn't have a clue. Still, this was a unique once-in-a-lifetime performance, but definitely not the definitive interpretation some of the commentators believe.
Often after he plays the right hand melody, why is he waving the wrist up and down then? Piano is not violin .. it is wasteful energy spent that can be reserved and used for other parts of more efficient, elegant and expressive keyboard contact process ...
