If people are spending their valuable time and money on this stuff for self defense, they are being robbed and lied to! It’s worthless in a real fight!

I'm not trained in any form of martial arts, but I'm pretty sure that in a real fight situation, after the initial strike (punch, kick, etc), the attacker isn't just going to wait and do nothing when the Aikido master blocks or sidesteps and follows up with a combination of locks and throws. I'd like to see how effective Aikido can be when an attacker aggressively follows up with a combination of punches, kicks, locks, holds and throws (blocks and side-steps included) of his own, to counter the Aikido master's moves.

Having trained for some 28 years I can say that you learn how NOT to get into a fight situation.

@@markgeorge5536 In this case it is all this people are learning. How not to fight! But it is great for fitness and culture anyway.

@@citzen9822 As I said 28 years. In a dojo there are rules and respect. In a street situation there are no rules. I didn't say I haven't been in a fight situation, I just rather NOT be after the last time, where the aggressor ended up with a broken wrist, elbow, dislocated shoulder and torn ligaments.

Thanks for editing and putting these up so fast, this year! It's really helpful to have this footage to reference before too much time passes when there was just so much new (to me) material at the camp!

In real life this grabbing arm will be bent more, very tight, he will pull you very close to him, almost lifting... his muscles will be tense... you will not overcome its tension. And... the opponent will constantly adjust his stance - he will not let you move to his outside...

i just discovered this collection of seminairs of Shirata sensei. What a valuable set of clips! Seeing it, all i can say i hardly see this level and personality, and real intrsuctions, with modern teachers nowadays. i feel too many modern aikido teachers are very good aikidokas but sometimes they do not know exactly why or what they are doing. they have perfectly copied the technique and flow, but are unaware of the deeper concepts and roots. Watching Shirata sensei, it is obvious he is the master and knows the full recipe... ;-) anyway, thank you to the person(s) responsible for making and uploading, and making this treasure available to thefew aikido students who digged through layers and layers of youtube of other less unique videos to get to here. ^_^ thanks!

Heard he was needlessly brutal and broke limbs of students un necessarily. Effective yes, but failed to grasp the true meaning of the art and needlessly harsh to those under his guidance. I have this from an impeccable source whos reputation is unsurpassed in the world of Aikido. You should not have people lined up for nikkyo and snap the arm, next person snap the arm next and so on, pretty awful conduct. Dont know if this was the norm but was witnessed on at least one occasion. The impression i was given was this was not an isolate indecent.
