I wish my kids would let me talk like that in class. At my school I would not be able to get one word out. Kids would be talking, cussing, getting on phones...not sitting there like that...unless she told them she was video taping . But they are a great group of students. She talked the whole time! Wow!

I love your encouragement to the students. I also like that you incorporate technology with the class, like asking them to find definitions.

Respectfully, the SUBJECT is who or what the sentence is about. Isn't the sentence, here, directly about what the "I" is doing (in this case, thinking) rather than what he thinks? Yes, we find out other information with the sentence, but whatever the "I" is observing in the process of thinking seems secondary to the fact that the "I" is thinking. As we observe what the "I" both what the "I" is observing and thinking about what he is observing, we are making a determination about the soundness of the parent's judgement not the child's. If the speaker said, "I taught that boy well," then the speaker would not seem as transparent as he does when we agree with his assessment of the situation. Therefore, the sentence is only secondarily about the child's apprarently distrubed condition and the measures that the parents might need to take to address it. In short, if the speaker just said, "This child needs help," then the sentence would be about the child. That's why in academic argumentation, we eliminate the self-reference when we state a thesis. If you argue, "I think global climate change is accelerated by human activities." The rebuttal may be focused on your thinking something rather than on the claim that you are making. In academic argumentation, the point is to make the statement with confidence that regardless of what you feel, think, or believe, the evidence offered in support of the thesis statement will convincingly validate the claim.

I know this comment is 7 years after the original upload, but in this pandemic, you are the kind of teacher every student wants. Your passion for the subject, your care for the students, and your command of the teaching of language arts is commendable and admirable. As someone who aspires to become an English teacher at the secondary level, you exemplified the kind of teacher I want to be. Thank you.

Wow! I'm watching this video right now just in awe of how engaging you are with your students! It's so empowering to see the way you speak and relate to them, and especially your teachings on different ways of showing intelligence. As an undergraduate student who is studying education - I am reminded of the reason I want to become a teacher through your example! All the best, thank you for sharing a lesson from your classroom!
