Really great job. Your photography is amazing. And you brought back a lot of memories. 47 years ago I did a bicycle tour and camped everywhere you pointed out. Hilo to Hilo in 4 weeks. Punaluu looks amazingly the same. My campsite at Kalapana is now under all that rock you walked on. It was about a quarter mile or so down the road. Gorgeous tiny spot right across from the sand. It was and is a special place. Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to go back one more time. 😊

What I find funny about these travel channels who show their trip to the Big Island.. They are useless and show that the person/people behind the video has no real clue what they are talking about and anyone who follows their advice is just a lemming tourist doing what all the other lemmings do. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that clueless tourists do these things. I love not having them around the places I like to go, it isn't that they aren't there, it is just a great thing that so many more are out doing these things shown here. What it tells me though, there is no way I would watch any of your other videos and want to do any of those things you show. If you are this clueless to the Big island, just proves that you are clueless all the other places you go. Again.. Not complaining, I am glad that so many tourists will watch the videos and do exactly what you do and not ruin the good places you don't show.

You only really need a 4WD vehicle if you want to drive to the top of Mauna Kea, since it's required and there's a checkpoint, though it's not really that bad of a road so I wouldn't consider it "off-roading". The lava roads you were on are doable by a regular car. Also, per your rental contract, you're not allowed to take a rental car "off road", to include Jeeps, and the road to the Green Sand Beach is so rutted out that a regular Jeep would probably get stuck, definitely don't do that road in your rental Jeep! The most popular car on-island is also not a Jeep, it's a truck, specifically, the Toyota Tacoma. The reason you see a lot of Jeeps is because it's what the tourists rent; it's not what the locals drive. Good recommendation about avoiding a convertible; it's either very hot on one side of the island or raining on the other.
