At what point does showing get excessive? Is there a “golden” ration of showing to telling?

I went to a Russell group university about 25 years ago and my whole class on my degree were white middle class kids with some upper class. No ethnic minorities and everyone spoke very articulate. Same when I visited Oxford university to see a friend.

I feel like in certain points of what you're writing, combining showing and telling can be more influential on your reader.

Hey, Benjamin, is it valid even when we are writing essays? Or is it just for when we are telling stories or talking to someone, for example? Because, based on my experience, whenever I was requested to write an essay, they always recommended to be concise and more specific. I'm not sure if I'm being clear enough, but that's my best

Simple minds need simple meanings. Not all who read can draw the same conclusion not stated, but infered. Difficult when learning a new language. You get my point.

Just make sure as beginning writers that show don’t tell is a rather modern Zeitgeist of writing stories and more practical for screenwriters and less for novelist, obviously you can still use it but the only real advice is to read through your favourite novels to determine what is your flavour. And then try to find a balance between those two techniques. It’s like saying never write in second person but that would of diminished many beautiful prose to come.

Totally agree. This video was really aimed at school children who have to write descriptively to pass creative writing tests.

@engvidBenjamin
@engvidBenjamin 25 күн бұрын
Everyone uses filler words, but I agree that we should seek to minimise usage. If you are using a filler word, it's best to use one from the target language.

A similar occurrence has happened in Aotearoa/New Zealand. My generation - I'm 70 and grew up listening - on the local news - to what we thought of as BBC aka 'posh' English. Many of the moneyed sections of society - large landowners/doctors/lawyers/the Professionals spoke with what we considered an 'affected' or 'posh' way of speaking. That has completely changed now, with the modern generation speaking with an American influenced e.g. 'Hey bro' vernacular which has become very widespread, and which, depending on one's viewpoint, could be considered 'cool' or amongst many of us oldies as 'crude' or 'crass'... take your pick!
