The day Hindus will really understand this treasure of UPANISHAD, Bhagavad Gita, Vedas which was the catalyst of the European Enlightment and their reanissance, will be the most important day of Humanity ! Because the conservation of this knowledge is vested on the shoulders of not only Indians but also all men and women living in this planet ! Let us see how the Europeans and Americans were influenced by the vedic thought ! The French have already incorporated the teachings of Upanishad in the guise of philosophy of Arthur Shopenhauer and even silently hidden in the curriculum of lycée students ! We observe without anydoubt the following authors who had been inspired by Vedic litterature : Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Butler Yeats, T. S. Eliot and Herman Hesse. A special mention about this Herman Heese who wrote the novel "Siddhartha" inspired from Buddha's philosophy which is a part of hinduism (Let us look at the structure of Hesse’s novel. Part One has four chapters, corresponding very loosely to the Four Noble Truths of the Buddha. Part Two has eight chapters, again corresponding loosely to the Eightfold Path recommended by the Buddha. Even BEETHOVEN seems to have been influenced by Indian thought : It is not clear why Beethoven wrote the following document, which must be an extract from a German translation of a work of Indian philosophy. Shedlock has a few ideas. Beethoven may have copied a work based on the Upanishads or from a work in German on Indian philosophy published at Jena in 1816, or the source may be an essay or a newspaper article. Another theory is that Beethoven had his attention drawn to the subject by Baron Hammer-Purgstall, who wanted Beethoven to set to music a poem representing Hindu religious beliefs. Here is the rough translation of Shedlock who confirms that the work of Beethoven carries many traces of Upanishad's every where as you can see for yourself : God is immaterial........ Your wisdom apprehends thousands of laws, but you always act of your own free will and to your honour. You were before everything that we worship. We owe you praise and adoration. You alone are the true Blessed, the best of all laws, the image of all wisdom. You are present throughout the whole world and sustain all things. Sun, Ether, Brahma. Shedlock notes that Beethoven drew a line through the last three words. Maria Writh says this , "Heinrich Heine, (1797 - 1856), a German author, wrote after listening to lectures on the Upanishads, “The Portuguese, Dutch and British have for a long time ferried huge treasures on big ships from India to their home countries. We Germans had to look on. But we will not be left behind. We take their knowledge. Our Sanskrit scholars provide us with this wealth from India right here in Bonn or Munich.” She speaks of a list of german intellectuals who were influenced by Vedic thoughts : Here is the excerpt of her essay whose link is given in NB : “If I were asked from which literature, we here in Europe would get the refinement, which we need most to make our life more universal, inclusive and perfect,… I would again point to India.” Many more Germans in love with vedic thought would deserve to be mentioned according to Maria Writh : For example the historian and philosopher Gottfried Herder (1744 - 1803), took the side of the Hindus in a fictional dialogue with a missionary....." "Or the Schlegel brothers (born in 1767 and 1772), of whom the elder one established the first printing press in Devanagari in Bonn with the help of the Prussian King. Or Herman Hesse (1877 - 1962), who wanted to visit India but reached only Ceylon, when he fell ill. He wrote “Siddhartha”. Or Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 - 1900), who is famous for claiming that “God is dead”. Yet even Friedrich Nietzsche praised India’s ‘religion’. He wrote, “in regard to religion, Europe has not reached the subtleness of thought of the ancient Brahmins”. Graf von Keyserling was one of the first who travelled to India after the Suez Canal had opened. He wrote a book on yoga, which was a big hit in the 1920s after WW1.
