Great insights, Charlotte! Your video really made me feel like I can connect with buyers without losing my mind haha. The idea of practicing icebreaker questions is brilliant and also your advice on storytelling and selling art as an introvert is so helpful, too! I've always wanted to ask you what’s your favorite piece of art you’ve ever sold and why??? also what's the most memorable reaction you've had from a buyer!? ✌

Aw thanks 😊 I think my favorite piece that I’ve sold is a lioness painting that had poetry on it, I attached an envelope for love letters. It was also my most memorable sale as the person who bought it was so excited about it. She got it as a gift to her husband for their anniversary 🥰

Quite interesting points actually, thanks. I'm not so far as an artist so it might be useful in future for me. About this visual art is being considered as a hobby - It is quite funny when you say you are painting and some of "friends" will reply something like: "Your paintings are nice, you can paint something for me..." in a way like let it be your pleasure to paint something for them :D

I have a problem with the "online places to sell my work" It is like building a house to sell at market price. You wouldn't build in an area with cheaper quality homes and expect to get paid the true value of your more expensive quality build. I know some sites are set up for purchasers to choose their price range of art they are seeking. Yet you're still on a site that is selling art that should be considered craft or student art. You don't choose a realtor that generally sells cheaper homes to sell your home that should be in a much higher market. There are people with plenty of money who are only looking for the great deals on great works. They will shop those lower price ranges, looking for a sucker. The same can be said for the tax write-off super high value market, where they are looking to purchase a $40,000 piece and donate it at $150,000 to steal tax payers money. I don't want my work associated with that tax scam art industry. Is there such site that is limited to a medium price range for professional art? Like $2,000-$10,000 or $20, 000 - $200,000. I know we are getting into the gatekeepers once we hit $20,000>

There is something in the service business called fire the client. My most favorite painting instructor told me early on, "do not give your art away to family or sell it for less than what it is worth. If you know it is a good piece, simply keep it for yourself to enjoy." When friends or family that I know do not have the funds to be purchasing my work, I simply tell them so. If they have goods or services for equal trade, that is fine. But you must perform the service before acquiring the piece of art. That typically brings them into reality. Charlotte is very intuitive when it comes to society issues and reality of things. IMO, everything she says can be well trusted. About minimalism, total hardcore minimalism seems very ignorant. Yet decluttering one's life can have great results and more freedom. If you value your time, the place you call home should be easy to maintain. More isn't better. Like art, a rather few well placed things can cause a better and lasting experience vs many possessions cluttering a space. Not just possessions, too many unrelated activities and relationships. Narrowing your focus can make for more pleasant experiences with the things you want to most focus on. We need not mention social media, most everyone knows the reality at this point, it's just a matter of willing to decouple.

One tip that might be useful. Don't get involved with marketing your work until you have enough finished pieces and your'e honest with yourself that you are ready to produce enough marketable art to make it worth your time and funds spent in setting up and running the marketing end of things. You need more good pieces to keep the show going, after selling a number of pieces. Staying focused while painting for 8-12 hrs per day after day after weeks and weeks is not something you want to assume or imagine about. You must first actually do it and see if that is the life you want. If you just want to be a hobby artist that sells a few great pieces every so often, then a different marking plan for that. Or if you create less time involved quantity of mediocre pieces, a different marking plan. At some point during this process you must test the waters to see where your art stands in the market. It would not be fair to society for you to hold many great works of art, just because you hate sales and marketing. Never sell yourself short during this process of testing the waters. Be willing to invest and loose at marketing the same as investing time and materials in the many pieces that turned out fails. Just because a certain great piece doesn't sell when you first put it out there, does not mean that a right buyer won't come along. One bad art showing does not mean all bad art showings. Buyers can be very undetermined when or where they will show up and purchase art. Many times they will leave a show kicking themselves for not having purchased a piece they liked. When artist drop their price to dump a piece, they are also devaluing themselves, their name. It is important to study the market and be as correct as you can while pricing your work. Rather than dropping the price, take it off the market, sell it to a friend for cheap or simply hold it for a long period and then put it back on the market at a readjusted price.

Heres a thought make th canvas or panel yourself for free theres always free material then take the value from that size canvas and price from an actual canvas or canvas then times your hommade canvas by the original price times 2 that takes care of the canvas price then the materials paint gesso sand paper brushes epoxy vanish times that by 1 times the real price then charge for your time detail and subject matter then quote a price and in your case to seal the deal a very lovley suck and f-u-c-k id give you a time and payment youd never forget babycakes👅👅👅💦💦💦😾😾😾🤤🤤🤤

I felt this video so much. I am still at the building phase of this business and have nothing to show for myself, and sometimes it drives me crazy, I have to admit. Because I see it in their eyes, that they have no idea how much I work for this unproductive (financially) business. I am not a princess, spending my husband's money, I work more than I worked when I had a "real" job and it's really tough. You need a lot of mental strength to start a business like this. It's no joke how tough you need to be to stay sane and frankly, we're not that tough, we're normal people, emotional and needing the same amount of comfort and security as anybody else.

It's ironic that the criticism toward making visual art for a living is looked down upon by the corporate world when it is the corporate world that looks to the visual arts as their means to hold and transfer their own wealth via investing into it.

Do you happen to have any tips on getting into teaching? It's a revenue stream I'd be interested in, but I always look at my painting process and I just...have no idea how I could teach anyone my process. It's not out of the oridinary or anything, it just always feels like a "just pick at it until it looks right" type of ordeal, you know?
@CharlotteJordanArt
@CharlotteJordanArt Ай бұрын
I get what you mean! First, you need to figure out your painting process so you can teach others. On your next painting keep note of what you're doing and how you are working through the layers. Teaching in itself is a skill that takes time and practice to hone, so get comfortable talking while painting and explaining what your are doing. Maybe start with some local in-person workshops or do some Instagram lives where you are explaining the steps of your painting as you go. Hopefully that helps!

Picking is part of the normal process of standing back, studying, then putting a mark down and standing back to see what it did. Typically in teaching something where it is a physical action, you should not use terms such as picking. Rather choose a less physical term like "watching"

Basically it makes the most sense for me and I do believe it is the correct decision for me. I have willingness, but social media scares me. I realize that it is important, so Im working through the fears I have. Hi teacher Charlotte, I just subscribed your course as I find you have acrylic lessons. I have paid 2000 for Millan art which is 3000 aud and it cover charcoal, acrylic, oil paintings and sprays and more. But I only finished 10 per cent so far becos it is so hard to follow. I found your courses are much more easier to follow with very clear step by step and your course is incredibly cheap. Only 55 dollars???Really ?? U did really great job on both arts and teaching And you added sense of humour on your art work which is my ultimate goal of whole art journey and I found most artworks are too too serious Thank you so much for your course and vedios which are extremely helpful and inspiring. I hope you never give up becoming a better and better artist.
