Many, many thanks for the nice round of selected preamps! I really liked the sound of the Arkham so much, it would be great for my taste! Here I also became aware of Caveman, these products are easy obtainable in Europe, Arkahm on the other hand (unfortunately) not. For me, Caveman is recognisably in the shadow of Arkham. Noble is great but not in my price range. Caveman has a big plus with the very well thought-out connection section, which includes FX send/return and combines this with D.I., then the tuner output and the perfectly solved question of the power supply (both with BP1 compact and BP1). Arkham leaves the power supply solution to all customers outside North America, which further increases the cost of commissioning the Arkham. In this respect, Arkham clearly falls behind Caveman. If I take these technical details into account in addition to the sound, Caveman BP1 now also comes into focus for me. A headphone output for silent practice would also suit the products of both providers very well.

I've heard Dingwall stamps the pickup type in the upper corner except for the FD3N, but that's obviously not the case here. Good to know! Most importantly though, it sounds great. Is the Neve preamp available only in custom/Rio models from Dingwall?
@JohnFoxBass

@@BunchyMutt Yes, the Neve preamp is only available on Canadian built basses and on the John Taylor model. All the import models come with FD3n pickups. The Canadian built models all come with Canadian made pickups which all have the pickup model designation engraved in the pickup shell.

Dings sit really well in the mix even in very thick and busy genres, no matter what you use to play one. I play a DRoc5 - I listened to an untouched DI recording of all parts from a death metal band rehearsal yesterday (I was using a pick) and you should've seen my face prune up when I heard it cut through the mix like warm butter.

@@metalicman1948 Very good observation! This was the very first video I made when I got the Shure shotgun mic. I was so excited to get that mic, I bought it specifically so I could make videos like this. I listened to the video after uploading it, and was very disappointed that it didn't sound anything like what the cabinets sounded like in the room. Several weeks later, I actually read the manual that came with the mic, and found out that it has a built-in feature where it rolls off the lows below 150 Hz to prevent the mic from picking up rumbles and vibrations from the room, traffic, etc. And by default, the low frequency roll-off is enabled. So unfortunately, this recording was made with the lows significantly rolled off! Once I found that out, I really should have just taken down this video because it is completely invalid as far as what you are actually hearing. Regrettably, I don't have the wider 212 here anymore so I cannot do another comparison video with the mic's low frequency roll-off disabled. My spoken comments and written comments are valid, but what you are hearing in the video is not an accurate representation of how they sound. I've sold a whole bunch of these 212s and everybody who has gotten one has raved about it. I'm sure you won't be disappointed by the sound, and you'll be completely in love with the weight.

@@JohnFoxBass think you can demo that so I can see how that would work?
@JohnFoxBass
@JohnFoxBass Ай бұрын
@@DiamondLifer Very simple - I use a 2’ long XLR cable out from the QC into the input on the back of the cab. And the cab also has 110V AC power. You set the volume on the cab on zero, turn everything on, plug in and turn everything on, wait for the QC to finish booting up and then turn up the volume on the cab a little past halfway, turn up the volume on the QC to wherever you want your volume, and that's it. I can throw together a quick video demonstrating the whole thing if you want. If so, reach out to me through my website so I can send you a private link to the video. It's not going to be something very fancy that I would want to upload publicly to the channel.

@@JohnFoxBass that would be a huge help because I’m trying to put together a new live rig for this new group that uses QC with DAW and in ears and the full thing. So I’m trying to find the most efficient way to jump into the fold and still have great stage sound and tone at my fingertips.

The SFIIs are little more V-shaped, but it's really not a very profound difference. You could EQ the FD3n to sound like a SFII. I think it would be more difficult to make a SFII replicate the mid-range bite of the FD3n (with frequencies, cutting is usually easier than adding). It would be interesting to hear the SFII through the Neve preamp.

@JohnFoxBass
@JohnFoxBass Ай бұрын
@@russhatcher8399 Thanks Russ. Yes, I had the preamp on and I set the tone controls how I like them: Bass on 7, treble on flat, master tone dialed back to about 6. You bring up an interesting point, I should do a side by side comparison since the only difference between the two models is the paint color and the fretboard. I would like to find out for myself how much of a difference there is, if any. I'll put that in my to-do list for this weekend and see if I can hear a difference. Since the mass of the fretboard is such a tiny percentage of the mass of the instrument, my theory is that the difference will be very slight.

Not much point showcasing a bass that’s already sold?
@JohnFoxBass
@JohnFoxBass 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for your thoughts and opinion on that. Some additional points you may want to consider are: 1. The customer who ordered it was excited to hear it and asked me to make a demo for him before I shipped it. 2. Other customers who are considering a particular configuration would like the opportunity to hear how that configuration sounds before making their purchase decision. 3. Dingwall currently has about 800 open orders for custom basses, and virtually all of those have already been sold to end customers, long before they even get built. People are waiting two to three years to get the bass they ordered. If the only demo videos made were videos of basses that are available for sale, then there would be approximately zero videos getting made. I can't speak for other dealers, but my next 35 custom Dingwalls are already sold. My understanding is that they are not building any "dealer spec" basses at this time, in order to minimize the wait time for customers who have put down a deposit and placed a custom order. If you are considering owning a custom Dingwall, then the time to order it is at least 2 years before you want to receive it.
