Much more dramatic than if you had taken the photo at night time. Incredible work, especially considering the photo you started with--a bright sunny day with high contrast. A very dynamic piece of photographic art, full of mystery. A pleasure just to look at.

Hi Jamie, another great tutorial. Question: if I do a generative fill and do not like any of the results, or change my mind, how do I exit the generative fill dialog and go back to the image's state prior to the selection? The only thing I see to do is a series of Ctrl+Z commands to achieve this. Any thoughts?
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin Күн бұрын
Hi David, I just use the command/control Z just to undo it, but you can always delete the layer if you are in Photoshop, otherwise in Lightroom you can just change the remove tool to a different one if you want more options. 😀

Jamie, I am now working with Luminar Neo as well as Photoshop. When I shoot RAW on my iPhone 15PM, I get 32 bits. I have to convert it to 8 or 16 for Neo. It's ugly when I do that. Thoughts?
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin 2 күн бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question, personally I use Photoshop for the conversion, and it does an excellent job, open directly in Adobe Photoshop via Camera Raw, once in Photoshop go to the Image Menu, then Mode and select 16bit from the selection, this makes an immediate conversation with very little loss in detail and colour depth. I hope this helps 😀

This is fantastic again. Worked through loads of your videos when I should be going to bed for work ha ha. Attempted one from a shot I took. But on my iPad it’s a struggle, one example subtracting from the mask it seems you can not pin the straight lines. I need to invest in a new laptop. I am hoping my Fuji XT3 has enough dynamic range as well for the one shot, under exposed night shots. One side note, I am a norwich lad, and I am shocked you have all these videos, but only one from Norfolk 😢😂. Keep up the great work.
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin 5 күн бұрын
Hi Michael, your XT3 will have more than enough dynamic range when you shoot in RAW, so no worries there. Lightroom is not as easy to use as Lightroom Classic, so a laptop would be the best way. The modern Apple silicon MacBooks are the best for this type of work. I live down near Long Stratton, so not so far away 😀
@michaelhawes8380
@michaelhawes8380 5 күн бұрын
@@jamiermathlinthanks for the reply. I thought it might be ok, but wondered if it might struggle against the likes of your Canon what is superb for dynamic range. I am seriously looking at the new MacBook air. The iPad is ok for fairly quick edits with basic masks and radials. My work mate lives in Stratton, I am in Wymondham. So many nice things around here for you to shoot.

Jaimie - Another excellent tutorial. I have been a subscriber for quite some time and this two year-old video popped up on my feed and I hadn’t seen it. This raises a question for me as a night photographer myself and someone who really appreciates learning from you. In your day to night conversions is there a time of day that you feel works best? Having seen a number of your tutorials, most recently the one in Connecticut at Yale. I noticed you took that photo at midday. I’m going to assume this photo was taken earlier or later in the day plus it was a cloudy day. I only say this as I am struggling a bit I try to convert photos I have taken in Boston area of similar subjects. I struggle to get the true nighttime appearance that you get. Just curious if you have a favorite time of day or cloud structure, etc. for these photos. Regards - Brian
@jamiermathlin

Hi Brian, we can create a day-to-night from any time of the day, however morning and evening are easier, plus low contrast days (and if it is raining) are best, as we then do not have to deal with the hard shadows, Cloudy days are my preferred lighting for day-to-nights. I hope this helps 😀

Hi Jamie, I really enjoy watching your day-to-night technique. I've been encountering the issue of hard shadows, as seen in this image, and I’m curious how you usually deal with them. Thanks!
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin 14 күн бұрын
Hi There, there are several ways I deal with hard shadows, however, the best way is not to have them of course, so to get the best day-to-night it is best to shoot on an overcast day, even a rainy day works very well, but if you have no choice as can be seen here, bright sunny day, blue sky, so very high contrast, I often create a moonlit scene. I did not do it here as I was more focused on generative fill, but you can see how I do this in a number of my videos, this one would be a good starting point:- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q8edi5Vi1N3HmnU.html
