@@GreenString : actually, I "stumbled" on your episode by searching on the comparison of the Honda AT and the Yamaha T7 because I'm in the middle of deciding on which of both I will buy this year. What would be your advice pls when the criteria is to have a Overlanding bike and an occational soft of road track??? Already many thanks!!!🙂

@@hdan1867Well, both bikes are brilliant. The AT on the video is the flagship model, electronic everything. For me it’s over complicated, for my mate it’s brilliant. Ultimately if your going to spend the majority of time on the road get the AT ( it pains me to say that) but it’s true. Hope this helps a bit👍🏻

True. For ultimate comfort that is the way forward. To be honest I now just lay my camp jacket I’m not wearing, as a thermal layer, on top of the cot in colder days…it saves even more space and weight! Thanks for taking the time to comment. Stay safe👍🏼

Thanks for the review! I went with the NatureHike so I can be 17” off the ground. But that extension pushes my cot to nearly 6 pounds! Too heavy for most. But I choose comfort over , well..not being comfortable, lol.

Hi Steve, very good review. I am thinking of going with a similar setup from Kriega on my Tenere 700. I am just curious what is the make of the top end luggage metal rack? It looks like it is a good support for the Kriega US 40 bag.

Hi, it’s from Altrider. I’ve been using their stuff for a while now, more recently on the T7 and previously a rear rack on my old GS. It has a superb mounting system and very well thought out. I have noticed, in places, the powder coating has started to rub off but as it’s aluminium this is not a problem and, to be fair it’s had a fairly tough time so far, 25,000km, 10 different countries (including Africa). So yeah I would buy it again. Naturally I cannot comment on other brands as I haven’t tested them out, so, in fairness there could be better out there? Firstly, I was so glad to hear that you don’t do unboxing videos and that you’ve used this for 7 years already. On top of that, Helinox sent you a free replacement leg, despite it being outside the warranty - that sounds like a good company! I’ve had two air mats fail on one trip, despite patching up the leaks multiple times and using them inside a tent at all times and spent some miserable days on hard ground as a result. I have been worried about buying a dud cot and the “good” ones are all expensive. Plus I don’t believe the advertised blurb. So your video was very timely. It sounds like this one is going to be worth the outlay. Thanks for sharing. I subscribed now btw.👍

Thanks for the Sub it’s really appreciated. As for air mats I fully understand your pain. They make way more sense than a cot and I really wanted them to work but, like you, I’ve woken up at three in the morning to find it’s sprung a leak. And I know they can be repaired in the field but it’s sometimes not that simple or easy. I now only use the cot. It’s pretty much bomb proof. The only reason I made the video because they sent me that leg for free. I was so impressed. I originally sent them an email just asking if I could buy the part and after a bit of email tennis they sent me the replacement. To me that’s worth paying the premium. Yes you can buy replica cots at half the price but I doubt you will get customer service like that. I have the Helinox chair one and it’s probably my all time favourite bit of camping gear. Still this is expensive kit, probably not worth paying the premium if your not a regular camper that will get there moneys worth. Anyway enough waffle. Strange as it may seem, I don’t think I had ever heard of the brand Knox before getting this jacket. After a bit of research they seem to have been making biking kit for some time. Really, really happy so far… but time will tell how it stands up to some serious hi mileage. P. S looks like you had a blast at the ABR👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Rolf. I’m loving this jacket. I think it could be, dare I say it, a “game changer” when it comes to Adv riding and especially camping as you can use whatever jacket you have as your round camp jacket can become your bike outer shell when riding. This all means less weight. In terms of comfort it’s seriously like you are wearing nothing. I wish I had it for Morocco. I also have a 2005 1200 GS and the drive shaft failed at 105000km. The shaft had never been serviced.

I mean, if your getting that kind of mileage out of your final drive before it fails, and like me, you’ve done zero maintenance to it I don’t think you can complain too much. What a great bike. Good review, but I wouldn't pay over a £100 for a camping cot. I got a Pacoone camping cot from Aliexpress for around £40. Including postage and postage

I agree it is a ridiculous amount of money for what it is and hard to justify, I believe the price has significantly risen since I got my cot. The only single justification (that I can think of) is the manufacturer support out of warranty but is that worth the price?

On my T7 I use the 2 12L, the Large tail bag, and the 2 6L, I’m trying to outfit R1250 GSA. Beautiful setup for sure, stay safe and ride on.

Good comparison. I have more cooking systems than any sane person should and it's always a struggle deciding which to use. What we need most of the time, is a kettle. The JB ticks that box brilliantly. Not only is it light and compact and insanely fast, but it all locks together and is very windproof, making it the perfect 'pit-stop' stove. If you have a jetboil, you can make a pot noodle and a brew, anywhere, any time. It's the perfect portable kettle. But actually cooking IN it, would be like cooking in your kettle at home. It's not a good idea. Your macaroni cheese or tine of Heinz will burn on the bottom and then you'll have 40 minutes trying to scrape the glue off the bottom of a long tube. Dont do it. The trangia is the exact opposite. Not great for a quick pit-stop, or a quick anything ...but the gold standard for cooking real food. Very windproof, very stable but also bulky, heavy and slow. Most people dont need a petrol stove and only realise they dont need one after they buy one ...or three ...like me.🙄 My top picks would be the smallest, lightest jetboil ...the micromo/zip/sol and never leave home without it ...and some alcohol stove variant as-well-as, not instead-of ...for the occasions where you may actually want to cook real food and have the time and energy to do it.

Haha, it’s so refreshing to read someone’s comment that mirrors exactly what your thinking. Your absolutely spot on with your description. I forked out a fortune for my MSR whisperlite. Within 4 days I had virtually completely abandoned it. Dirty, smelly & awkward but does it have a genuine place for us campers, but definitely at the extreme end of the camping spectrum. I stick with my opinion that the Trangia is probably the best stove if you don’t know what you want as it will do it all and you could always convert to gas or even a petroleum with an adapter if that was your thing. The basic Trangia is pretty good value for money for its flexibility. Anyway, enough waffle. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. It is greatly appreciated. Stay safe👍🏼

@@GreenString You're right about the trangia. The thing is, I just cant be bothered with it. For me, I'm happy living off coffee, pot noodles, cup-a-soup, muesli and mars bars ...but mostly coffee ...and there is always the chippy for when all that msg is giving you headaches. But my food group of choice is coffee ...did I mention that? The coffee press that JB make for their stoves is brilliant. I may take something else as well, but I'll always have a jetboil ...and loads of coffee.

Nice review of the stoves. I find that the cooking system is evolving with each trip to find out what suits you best. For us it is the Trangia 🙌 at least for now 😂

Good review with nice straightforward explanations of each system. Nice! I'm just on the point of cobbling together a kind of mini Trangia setup using just the burner and wind shields. This is an experiment to see what I think. Current setup is a little single gas burner that I have had for donkeys years. 220g of gas, a Vango saucepan setup... not sure why I carry the whole set as I only ever use one pot to cook in, also a little kettle, a folding wind shield which is essential in cutting down on wasted heat and so making cooking time quicker, which itself cuts down on the amount of gas used. Last a square of plywood to avoid scorching the grass at campsites. The pots, kettle, burned and gas all fit into a small roll top bag and the other two items are flat and can easily be stuffed into a pannier somewhere. I can get seven days of drinks and meals out of 220 / 240g of gas.

I do miss my Trangia kettle. It used to make me feel “civilised” in the mornings making a brew. It’s interesting to find out I’m not the only one that builds together their own cook set. I guess it’s a personal thing but the more you do it the more you understand what works and what doesn’t. I see a lot of videos where they are comparing how fast each stove is at boiling an equal amount of water. Now, apart from the efficiency of less time equals less gas or fluid I cannot see the point. Personally I’m never in a rush when I’m at the campsite and this is where the little Trangia alcohol stove wins and I love it. In the morning you can brew up in silence. My MSR sounds like a Vulcan bomber taking off… it’s mental!

I suppose this is why I carry the full Vango set, as there is always a risk, no matter how slight that I may wish to use both pans and possibly even the tiny frying pan.... no, now I have strayed off into fantasy land, but jetboil type stoves are just no good for me, not least because of the very real danger of Mr Clumsy Oaf kicking his stove and boiling water all over the floor while reaching for a tea bag!

Good summary and completely agree with the pros and cons of each. For my EU camps i have settled on the sea to summit x set as it gives me a saucepan, frying pan and kettle and combine it with a soto amicus burner (similar to the pocket rocket but with 4 prongs for pans which i prefer). Not quite as compact as your set up but i spread the various bits out with the cannister across the panniers, etc. If i was going on a long tour (nordkapp etc) then would definitely invest in the whisperlite as finding gas cannisters can be a real pain in some countries. doesn't seem very easy to fit back on bike when fully loaded... i mean come back from hotel room, bag dull and you have to fiddle with the strap system to mount it. What is your opinion on this please?

Hi, it’s pretty quick to mount the bags ( even loaded ) the top two buckles are really quick to get into the upper slots, then the bags and weight are supported so you have both hands free. I do agree though, you then have to bend down to feed the lower straps through the mounting plate. This may get annoying for some riders especially if you are staying in hotels where you want to take the bags with you. However I think you will encounter this problem in one form or another with most soft luggage. I camp all of the time so the bags remain on the bike.

@silveriojohan Yeah I get what you mean. I have zero regrets going from a GS to a T7. I’ve beaten my T7 to death this year, 20,000 km, 10 countries and I love it more and more. Most of all though every time I swing my leg over it I feel like a Dakar hero😂 even though I’m terrible at off road riding! I guess it what makes you happy that matters most👍🏻 let me know how you get on with your bike choices in the future.

Perhaps not that warm, but what about the 40km desert stretch? That seemed HOT?

Typical desert temperatures for that time of year. I think the hottest it got was 34 degrees and you’ll notice in the evenings we were in shorts but had warm jackets on, not sure on temperature then but chilly. You could equally have an amazing road trip around Morocco we spent only €200 in Morocco for 7 days riding. Ferries are super cheap but a bit crap…. Oh and temperature on top of the fortress must have been high twenties but very strong winds ( my tripod was blowing over)

As always guys great video and looks an epic adventure. I know you like exploring off road on the big bikes and all credit to you both.. my gsa is definitely a tarmac only bike 😂. People dont release how hard off road riding can be, i tried it last year for the first time (after 30yrs riding) and struggled even on a lightweight CRF!! Ride safe 👍🇬🇧

Yeah I agree. Riding those bikes on the Trans Euro Trail in Spain is borderline stupid (with our skill level). I did a bit of research before we went on the TET facebook page and was told that the section we did was easy on any bike, and it was in most cases but still you can very quickly get out of your comfort zone. Jason did exceptionally well on the big Honda, the T7 is definitely an easier beast off road than my old GS…alas not easier on my backside on the long motorway sections😂 As always thanks for taking the time to comment, stay safe and keep riding👍🏻👍🏻

Yeah, the DCT oil level wasn’t actually low it was empty. Although this was not linked to the braking issue it was one of a couple of fluid levels that were not checked on his service ( by a Honda dealer) prior to departing.

@@johna6968 Possibly? I mean, I’m blaming the Honda dealer for not checking but we had already covered over 1500 km before it became an issue and like you said some of that was off road so I guess the DCT was working hard. It’s difficult to pin point who or what was at fault but it was an easy fix.

Excellent work! I have to install the same kit to my Africa Twin soon! One question... Where did you buy what it seems a "relay' box" installed under the rear seat?

Hi, it’s my mates bike so I’ll respond on his behalf. If I recall correctly he picked it up a car specialist electrical shop, it may have even been for maritime use, I’m not sure. Thanks a lot, your review is an inspiration. I was hesitating between kriega and throwing a fortune at mosko moto. But when I found out that you use exactly the same setup that I imagined for myself - I'm convinced to get kreiga. See you off the roads:)

Thanks for your kind words. Mosko Moto seems to be heavily influencing the internet and while I admit there kit looks top notch I’m still convinced the flexibility and simplicity of Kriega wins. I’m still using my base system virtually everyday on my way to work…it brilliant. It also performed brilliantly on a recent trip to North Africa ( video out soon).
