Very well thought out and presented. I also lived close by Im Texas when this tragedy occurred. I put a lot more blame on that crazy “preacher” and his wife. They certainly stirred the pot and kept it on a simmer. Great work Mama Jones. Sure do miss you.

This christian notion that women are inherently evil is what pushed me far away from the church as a kid.

It almost seems like a whole lot of dangerous people are Christian zealots. Nothing wrong with being Christian, I am a former Catholic myself, but it's just too conservative for me. I've just seen many people with unchecked mental illness who believe God is telling them to do things, like killing people. And many cults seem to stem from Christianity, especially with the leader having psychosis of the reincarnation of Jesus.

I’m not even halfway through and have many thoughts. My daughter was 1 when this happened. At my 6 week checkup after she was born my doctor asked me what my mood was overall. I told her I cried everyday. I didn’t know that wasn’t normal. We talked about it and I was diagnosed with PPD. That being said, Andrea was basically begging for help. She was so brainwashed. I blame the cult including her husband. Why isn’t seemingly always men that start cults and target women? Although she apparently loved being a mother she had no identity other than that and a wife and baby maker.

She was mentally I'll. Her husband was controlling, didn't want her on BC or psychological medication even though her Doctor warned against having more children. He didnt care. He knew she should not be left alone with the kids for any amount of time. HE should be in prison.

I don't feel bad for her. She decided to go off of medicine and have all of her kids, knowing the risks. The man should be in prison too but she knew she had problems, knew giving birth was triggering it, and kept doing it anyway. I feel bad for the kids. Being religiously abused and isolated and then killed.

I also think the insurance companies hold a good chunk of responsibility. She was discharged when they quit paying, but she wasn’t any better.

Oh my god…this poor woman…she was failed by everyone and now she has to live with a pain that I cannot even imagine 😔 My partner (cis M) has struggled with psychosis, which includes having had an intense episode over the course of a few days that was only made worse by a lack of sleep. Having supported him through that event, I witnessed first hand just how scary and disorienting the experience was for him-it was difficult and highly concerning for me as a witness/support person, but I guarantee it was nothing like the hell he was enduring. This poor mother must have been so terrified trapped in her delusions that were seemingly only being made worse by the careless/ignorant decisions of those closest to her (i.e. not really taking what she said seriously; persuading her to get off stabilizing medication; keeping her essentially bound to what sounds like an extremely stressful environment; etc.,). Hearing about the progression, it is doubtful that she did not *want* to hurt her children and that, had she been cared for/able to be of rational mind, she would not have taken the same actions. I can also see how, in a distorted frame of mind, a person could see such actions as the kindest way to love someone (“saving” them from eternal damnation through death). I cannot believe the first jury found her to be competent/NOT insane given her documented medical history and the information shared by people around her regarding the state of mind she was in-THAT is absolute insanity!

By allowing the next baby, Mary, to be conceived despite be warned against it, Rusty is partially responsible.

This case is why I never had more than my 1 baby; my story is not the same as Andrea's in the least and Lord knows my heart BLEEDS for her. But how poorly my mental health was managed after my babies birth I knew a second child would "send me over the edge" - from being told "you can't be depressed, this (motherhood) is what you wanted" to "there is nothing wrong with you, your baby is 5yrs old. You are fine." I have since done everything I can to avoid having a second baby. (And I live in Canada, where support is "reasonable" for Mothers)

Howdy all, just for reference as someone who's called 911 on a suicidal friend and a few medical emergencies: here where I am (AZ) It's about a 50/50 between them sending the fire department and them sending the cops. I think cops is more likely for mental health emergencies. Please be aware before you call!

Also: Rusty should have been charged. Just because a woman will put up with you squeezing her until she breaks doesn't mean you should be legally allowed to.

I will never understand why Rusty wasn't charged. By my account of the timing when this happened, her last two pregnancies were at times when she probably wasn't competent to give consent. And if she indeed told Rusty she didn't want to have sex and he did anyway -- she's mentally ill, but he's just an evil narcissist.

40:27 how could her husband actually be okay with her potentially having a similar episode for the sake of having another baby? If he wasn't there to take the knife from her she probably would have killed herself that day.

I will have to take this one in shifts. But I said it a few years ago when you mentioned you might cover this story, and I will say it again now: RUSTY SHOULD BE IN PRISON TOO. If we are going to punish those responsible for the deaths of those babies, Rusty is every bit as responsible as Andrea. Maybe even more so….

Another example how the fact that the USA does not have universal health care lead to a tragedy. How can anyone defend the healthcare system in the USA is either brainwashed or plain stupid (or they have some financial interest that has the byproduct of innocent people suffering and dying.) Also as a someone from one of the most atheistic countries on the planet it is quite difficult to understand how powerfull a religion can be and how it can manipulate people...and it is quite terrifying

If i remember correctly, she drugged the orange juice and then drowned them one at a time. I am curious how much time from when the husband went to work to when the event was completed. But based on the theme of the video, I am sure he had a demanding job, but this shows people need to look after their partners, and especially in this case need to listen to their partners.

This happened to me. Thankfully I had a supportive husband and FORCED the dr to do something under threat of getting his ass kicked, because I had been reporting the symptoms to him for WEEKS at the end of my pregnancy. I had my tubed tied after that pregnancy. I sought treatment after he stopped nursing.
