I'm shocked that everyone keeps saying this is a great interview and the interviewer is doing an excellent job. She's asking such bland, uninformed, boring, and uninsightful questions and constantly telling him who he is "your songs are all about dark characters, why do you write like that?" "do you still feel like an outcast?". She keeps pushing him down avenues he doesn't want to go down: "have you had rough times?" "all sorts of times." "but have there been rough times?" he still doesn't answer, then she just throws some random quote of his at him.... This is terrible interviewing. Waits is the only great part of this interview. He has very early in the interview realized that this woman has nothing interesting to say and so he just goes into myth-mode and starts telling her tall tales, silly fibs, and making goofy answers that she keeps responding to in a serious manner and trying to draw back to some "tell me all your deepest secrets" garbage. If Waits was less of a gentleman and more a rock star type, he would have taken the mic off 30 seconds in. If he was a Harrison Ford type, he would have just gotten quiet and stopped answering and given terrible half-answers. Here, he's recognizing her as someone in over her head, but trying to do a good job for an audience that might care about him and support him so he's being sweet and polite, but having fun the whole way through and avoiding as much of the idiocy as possible. If you want to see an interviewer who knows how to talk to Waits and get his respect, watch this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdCIZsiXl63Kl5c.html

We are grateful to your efforts in recovering the parts of this interview. However, I don't believe that you have mentioned the name of the interviewer, who seems to be either Portuguese or Brazilian. This woman is a superior interviewer; she provides wonderful chemistry, and her questions are unparalleled = or perhaps it is her beauty mingled in with something charming about her persona.

The most blood from a turnip I’ve ever seen. Oh the stories he would tell you in shoot the sh*t in a roundabout way. Never waste murder on a stranger. I crawl into his songs like clothes in a stage show.

" You're not going to remember everything about the dream, sometimes you just wake up with some feathers in your hair"... what a great way with words and concepts, he truly puts pictures in your head. A real one off and I've loved his music ever since I heard 'Hang on St. Christopher ' on a magazine giveaway cassette for Island Records artists. There is at least one memorable line in every song. My favourite being; " I got a head full of lightning A hat full of rain ". Never seen him be so ( relatively) straightforward and literal in an interview.

Married to Kathleen Brennan when this interview happened. He mentions it and they discuss her contribution to his music by that point in his life. She’s awfully flirty for a journalist though … because I gather she’s actually an actress. Brazilian actress Bruna Lombardi.

Tom Waits should write a book... Him, Werner Herzog, and Martha Argerich are scarily old and, of too much creative eminence to ever leave this world. Also she has a common look, but Bruna Lombardi is so beautiful- (what is her writing like? To who has read something..) have not begun the interview to actually speak on the quality of it, but~~~

yeah some of the questions were a bit too invasive but her ..... i guess innocence and playful nonjudgement makes you not want to call her out but her questions are sincere and more anecdotal which was perfect for Tom. I could tell he would stop thinking what did she just ask me but realize shes such a sweetheart and genuine that it would be almost rude to snap on her. also its just chemistry. she could riff on dark fantastical humor. Im the same an alot of times people will not really get my humor and treat it almost like an inside joke. Shes on point and you could strike up any conversation with her. and her being a little flirty always helps.

What a great surprise! Tom is one of my favourite musicians, so it was a pleasure to ear this interview. But the greatness of it is due to the interviewer, Bruna Lombardi, as she had the intelligence and sensibility to reach out to him. An interview is always a product of the interaction of both parts, and this one just came out beautifully.
