A very nice regimental museum, during my two visits to the UK (1999 and 2005) I had the chance to visit a few military museums, they all seemed to me fairly small but well-designed. I remember particularly the nice museum of the Royal Green Jackets at Winchester. The Household Cavalry Museum was fairly gloomy although its curator (Major Kersting, 1999) was an excellent and courteous guide.

Being a woman, I have to comment on a few additional things: the fashion and the fighting femme. I thought they were going to be brave filmmakers and semi-accurately dress the female main character as an appropriately clad married gentlewoman when she had her hair entirely covered in that first hall scene, but alas, they couldn't bring themselves to trade appeal for accuracy. An eyeblink later, she's running around with her hair flying about, maidenly and silkily clean in an era before shampoo, during an absolutely terrifying crisis in front of a dozen armed men she just met and pervy King John on the other team of barbarians. Not even a braid to keep it from being grabbed by all and sundry during the fight while she's valiantly wielding a mace that looks like it would weigh at least 10 lbs if made with era appropriate materials, so dang, she got the stamina of the veteran Templar knight twice her size in that lovely slender frame. She also crazy af for going out there in a gown (albeit with a cool off the shoulder ensemble complete with a rivets on the bodice...wow, must be just as good of protection as Marshall's hauberk!) There are several more fashion sins, but I will get on to the next point about she of the luxurious swinging locks: wow, what a warrior woman. Like my goodness, people are getting split in half and there's our feminist icon right there in the thick as if she's been training with the young squire in the muddy yard every day. Honestly, everything about this lady was nowhere near how a woman of that time conducted herself, and I do hope people kniw that. She initiates conversation with Marshall, who is wearing the insignia of a highly respected holy order. Tends to his wound personally, giving him sass, when there are males to do the bandaging. She seeks him out alone, as if privacy was an actual thing. The whole picking up his sword thing...I snorted my drink so hard right there, it came out my nose. I was wondering if she was going to put a Scarlet Letter on her chest and get it over with, or dump some anachronistic gasoline on her reputation and flick a lighter...and don't get me started on what happened in that barn. I'm all for modern ideas of equality, but they look ridiculous in medieval England. The gender customs of that time weren't just stuffy misogyny. There were no paternity tests nor were SA evidence kits a thing. Reputation was absolutely necessary to one's credibility and safety. Boundaries of class, gender, status, and wealth were things the smart person of the time didn't cross.

@@SARHistories well, firstly most immigrants have no interest in UK history or culture. So, Mr Hitch would wonder why there are people in the UK who have no recognition of the country they are in. Then maybe Mr. Hitch would wonder why these people don't speak English and then Mr. Hitch may have to physically defend himself from people who will accuse him of being a bigoted, racist and not a hero.

This is a much needed analysis. The Anglo-centric account stems from the efforts of a British captain who was charged a decade later with collecting oral histories of the battle from surviving British officers. This was a laudable effort, but it also resulted in a very English slant, with barely any attention paid to the Prussians, who broke through the angle of Napoleon's lines at around 6:30 pm, invested the rear of the Old Guard, and started the panic that became a rout of the French army. Although director Sergei Bonderdunk couldn't make enough mud, he still landscaped about ten square mile of the Ukraine to match the Waterloo battlefield, and even planted the correct crops! The expense of it all bankrupted Dino de Laurentis's production company.

What a jumbled up, poorly edited bore this film was. This moment in history was very interesting, but this movie was a slop bucket that blew through a big budget to make a dismissible, garbled mess that neither celebrates a great Zulu victory, or shames a moronic English defeat. This was no where near as good as "Zulu". I blame poor casting and an unskillful screenplay. Burt Lancaster? You call that acting? No charisma. The Zulus are portrayed as a Zombie army, their leader portrayed as a Sadist, and the English as what they are, TeaBagging wankers. Was the director of photography a wedding photographer? Everyone seems so stilted, except the Zulu Dancing scenes, which are the best part of this whole rotten egg. P.U. this thing stinks.

I have read enough British military history to know that the hateful (there is no other word) British government NEVER took care properly of their war veterans. Does Lloyd George´s famous sentence "A land fit for heroes" ring a bell? It is both sad and infuriating, and I am not even British. I always have a deep sympathy and respect for old soldiers, it is as simple as that. War veterans should be priority No. 1 for any decent gorvernment.

Thank you very much for this video. I like the way you tell facts from fiction in a clear, straightforward manner without going into unnecessary details or trying to show off great knowledge. Luckily, in 2004 I purchased a most beautiful edition of the "Waverley Novels" (Adam & Charles Black, Edinburgh, 1871) for a ridiculous price. Some of Scott´s novels are more entertaining and easy to read than others. Thanks to you I shall start on "Rob Roy" this weekend! I vaguely remember the film, which was entertaining at the expense of historical accuracy (as usual). Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
